John E. Kickbusch, 85, of Portland and formerly of Walterville, has died of age-related causes.
He was born in Turkey River, Iowa, and married Opal Barnhart on June 2, 1955, in Reno, Nev.
He was raised in Walterville and graduated as salutatorian from Springfield High School. After high school, he worked as a logger and then went into the military. He served in the United States Army during Word War II in India as an engineer in the Army, receiving the Asian Pacific Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He worked for 30 years as a Portland police officer, retiring in 1977. He was an avid hunter and gardener.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son: William Kickbusch (and his wife, Sandra); two daughters: Diane Leonard and Carla Kickbusch; two sisters: Winnifred Spencer and Zula Kickbusch; as well as two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Saturday, March 27, at Young's Funeral Home in Tigard.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission.
