Bio: SLOAN, Iowa -- Jon M. Roarson, 72, of Sloan passed away Monday, Aug, 1, 2011, at a Sioux City hospital following a courageous battle with multiple health problems.Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Skien Lutheran Church, Albaton, rural Sloan, with the Rev. Craig Bock officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa. Condolences may be left online for the family at www.rushfamilycareservice.com.Jon was born April 19, 1937, in Sioux City, to Owen and Iva (Claus) Roarson. He graduated from Sloan High School in 1957.On May 28, 1957, Jon was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Beverly Thomas, at Skien Lutheran. To this union, three daughters were born. Jon was a member of the 174th Air National Guard for six years, joining while still in high school. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 16, 1962. He worked as a lineman for N. W. Iowa Tel. Co. for 16 years. Jon and his brother, Jerry, were farming partners for 20 years. In 1981, he started Jon Roarson Seeds and enjoyed the interaction with area farmers. Many acres were farmed while drinking coffee at the Sloan Café and his seed office. He was actively involved in both farming and the seed business until recently, when his health began to decline. Farming was his passion, but family was his life.In 1994, he was a kidney donor, giving his daughter Roxann a gift of life that extended her life for 11 years.Jon was trustee and past president of Skien Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Adult Bible Study Class, where he enjoyed discussions that helped deepen his faith. He was a current board member of the Fairview Cemetery Association. As an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed sharing his love of hunting and fishing with his grandchildren. He and Bev enjoyed many fishing trips to South Dakota in their Lund boat. It was his hope that his grandsons will continue his love of the outdoors.Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Beverly of Sloan; his daughters, Rhonda (Mike) Wilt of Sloan, and Rachelle (Ed) Scott of Salix, Iowa; son-in-law, Kevin (Vicki) Kollbaum of Hornick, Iowa; grandchildren, Katie (Chris) Scott, Kayla Scott, Jon (Shauna) Wilt, Andy (his fiancee, Stephanie Baker) Scott, Gregory Scott and Kenton Kollbaum; great-grandchildren, Lily Scott, Owen Scott, Tyson Wilt, Raegan Wilt, Dustin Scott and Jacob Scott; brothers, Jerry (Janice) Roarson of Sloan and Dennis (Brenda) Roarson of Onawa; a sister, Jeanne (Randy) King of Walthill, Neb.; and many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his daughter Roxann Kollbaum; his parents, Owen and Iva Roarson; a granddaughter, Jenna Rose Wilt; and his mother and father-in-law, Harley "Bud" and Eva Thomas.
