Bio: Donald R. Velten, 83, of Lafayette, died unexpectedly at 9:47 p.m. Wednesday, October 17, 2012, at his residence.He was born March 15, 1929, in Lafayette, to the late William N. and Fleeta Gayle Kinnaman Velten.He served in the United States Navy from 1947 to 1951.He graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High School and Purdue University.His first marriage was to Helen Joann Wisch in 1955 in Lafayette she preceded him in death in 2003, he then married Marilyn Pitzer Bell in 2003 and she survives.Donald was a machine repairman at Delco in Kokomo before retiring in 1991.He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church and Shrine, American Legion Post 11, UAW 292, Greater Lafayette Rock and Gem Club, Purdue Alumni, and the USS Albemarle/USNS Corpus Christi Reunion Association. He volunteered as a Red Coat at Home Hospital, was a member of numerous camping clubs and enjoyed rock hunting, hiking, and traveling.Surviving along with his wife are two sons, David (wife: Marvella) Velten, Daniel (wife: Kelly) Velten; two daughters, Diane Velten, Jolene Saltsman, all of Lafayette; two step sons, Charles Randal (wife: Joyce) Bell, of West Lafayette; Jeffrey (wife: Susan) Bell, of Valparasio; two step daughters, Sherry Tipton, of Avon, Julie (husband: Matthew) Hancher, of Woodridge, Ill.; a brother, Paul W. (wife: Carole) Velten, of Lebanon; three grandsons; six step-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by a sister Norma Carolyn Velten.Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. with Rosarey at 4:45 Sunday, October 21, 2012, at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel 400 Twyckenham Blvd. Lafayette, IN 47909 with Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 22, 2012, at St. Ann Catholic Church 612 Wabash Ave. Lafayette, IN 47905; Fr. Dominic Young officiating.Entombment will follow at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens.
