Eugene E. Bertsch, 90, of Grand Forks, ND passed away Saturday, October 17, 2015 in Altru Hospital in Grand Forks.
Eugene Edward Bertsch was born August 18, 1925 in Grand Forks, ND the son of Melvin and Catherine (Fettig) Bertsch. He was raised and attended school in Grand Forks. He entered the United States Navy on April 6, 1943 at Grand Forks, ND and during World War II served aboard the USS Crater in the South Asiatic Pacific Theatre. He was honorably discharged from military service on May 13, 1946. He returned to Grand Forks and was employed with the Great Northern Railroad and the Burlington Northern Railroad until his retirement in 1982. Eugene married Hazel Hovet, the daughter of Theodore and Gladys Hovet, on October 18, 1947 in Grand Forks. Hazel preceded him in death on October 26, 1985. He enjoyed woodworking, playing cards and Bingo, watching Fighting Sioux hockey and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the American Legion Post 157 and a lifetime member of The Veterans of Foreign wars Post 3817.
He is survived by his children, Denise Carol (Gary) Raymond, Walker, MN, Barbara Lynn Bertsch, Denver, Co, Bradley Eugene Bertsch (Jennifer Saure), Perham, MN, Jeffrey Brian Bertsch (Susan Vasek), Grand Forks, ND, Tracey Lee Tugya, Aurora, Co, Kelly Sue (Daryl) Foley, Grand Forks, ND; a brother, Roie (Dona Moore) Bertsch, Whittier, CA; 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Hazel; brothers,, Manny Bertsch, Liney Bertsch; sisters, Geraldine Cadreau, and Marilene Monez.
Funeral Liturgy: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 21, 2015 in the Historic Norman Funeral Home-Gregory J. Norman Funeral Chapel.
Visitation: One hour prior to the liturgy in the funeral home on Wednesday.
Burial: Calvary North Cemetery, Grand Forks, ND.
Military Honors: Accorded by members of the American Legion Post 157, The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3817, North Dakota Army National Guard and the United States Naval Reserve.
