Bio: Obituary Bismarck Tribune (Jan 01, 2013)James K. Kubisiak, 82, Billings, Mont., died Dec. 20, 2012, of natural causes at his home, Bonaventure Senior, in Billings. Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held at St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck, at a later date.James was born in 1930 in Gladstone, the son of Valentine V. and Emelia (Dinius) Kubisiak. He grew up in nearby Dickinson and graduated from Dickinson High School, where he enjoyed participating, with some distinction, in football, track and choir. A good student and senior class president, he enjoyed learning new things and had a naturally curious mind. He shared what he learned with his friends and loved ones. He attended Bismarck Junior College and earned an associate's degree in business.Jim, as he was known to his friends and family, served in the Navy during the Korean War years and was stationed in Memphis, Tenn., and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. In 1951, he married Frances Marie Thomas, also of Dickinson. Together, Jim and Marie raised six children in Bismarck. Jim owned and operated "Jim's Records" for many years on Fifth Street in the downtown area. Later, Jim went into publishing, which included producing and distributing the Midweek Shopper and later JM's Nutritional Review. Marie passed away in 1975. She was greatly missed by Jim, the children and her entire family. In 1990, Jim married Catherine Lovin, and they eventually moved to Grand Junction, Colo., where they resided until Catherine's passing in 2000. Jim married Pauline Bensing a few years later for a short time. Subsequently, Jim returned to Bismarck, alone, and, in 2010 moved to Billings, Mont., where he took up residence at Bonaventure Senior. He resided there until his passing.Jim is survived by his sisters, Emily Wolf (John), Rochester, Minn., Dorothy Magelky (Henry), Bloomington, Minn., Joyce Eglin (Dick), Sonoma, Calif., Judy Busse (Wayne), Oklahoma City, Okla., and Dorothy Podolanchuk, Bentonville, Ark.; his brothers, Leo Kubisiak (Marge), Johnson City, Tenn., and Ted Kubisiak (Helen), Bismarck; his children, Tom Kubisiak (Georgina), Portland, Ore., Kathleen Phillips (Mark), Billings, Mont., Russell Kubisiak (Katie), Missoula, Mont., Mary Robertson (John), Springfield, Mo., Steven Kubisiak, Bismarck, and Michael Kubisiak, Bismarck; his grandchildren, Christine Lyle (Nick), Billings, Mont., Maximilian Kubisiak, Missoula, Mont., and Noah and Nathaniel Emmet, Portland, Ore.; and one great-grandchild, Ethan Lyle, Billings, Mont. He also leaves behind one especially loyal and generous friend, Elva Loyning, who helped him through his last difficult years, months and days.Jim enjoyed music, especially the human voice. He was an accomplished carpenter, a skill he learned and shared with his father and brothers. He also passed on those skills and know-how to his children. He could cut a straight line with a handsaw and was impatient with anyone who couldn't. Jim was an avid gardener and had a profound love of the natural world, and later in his life, he took many trips to national parks in the United States and Canada. This love of the outdoors was expressed in many ways, but perhaps most profoundly when he took his children fishing, often at Sweetbriar Lake. Jim was also a natural cook who enjoyed eating and preparing food for his family. It would be difficult to identify his favorite food, but a good bet would be a bowl of hot buttered popcorn. And Heaven is full of popcorn. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to a charity of ones' choice.
