Shortly after high school, he joined the Army National Guard. He married Barbara Cordes on Aug. 16, 1968, in Anchorage. Russ was a man of many trades. After the National Guard, he worked a while in real estate in the 60s. From there he had a short stint in home building. Russ then worked for SWECO Oilfield Service until they pulled out of Alaska, and he had no intention of leaving. Eventually, he returned to work as a sales rep for Alaska Cleaners. He then went on to warehouse manager for Cameron Iron Works, until his final retirement. Russ was a lifetime member of Elk Lodge 1351. When they closed their doors in the 90s, he found friendships at the Moose Lodge and American Legion. He enjoyed his afternoon stop ins for a cup of coffee. Russ loved Alaska. He spent many summers driving his family from Anchorage to Circle Hot Spring to Valdez, tent camping all the way. He loved driving up the highway with his sister and daughter for their annual blueberry trip. Most of all he loved hiking or snowmachining to his cabin Ro-Le-Jo on Red Shirt Lake.
