BECKERT, SR., HOWARD MARKS, Howard Marks Beckert, Sr., was born January 1, 1920, in Pittsburgh, PA. He passed away Sunday, August 24, 2008. He graduated from Perry High School where he was active in all sports. He volunteered to join the United States Navy. He retired from all service January 5, 1945, and began his lifelong journey of working with children by earning a Masters of Education at the University of Pittsburg. On June 5, 1946, he married Margaret McQuistion of Lebanon, PA. She passed away in 1973. To this union were born two children, Howard, Jr. (Cheryl) and Dorothy Rhodes (Jim). These children blessed him with three grandchildren, Michael and Jennifer Maxwell and Laura Beckert. There are three great grandchildren. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. In 1951he moved to Florida and became coach of many sports at Ocoee and Apopka High School. In 1954, he left a successful coaching career and became the principal at the new Dream Lake Elementary School. He led the school until his retirement in 1977. Known as "Mr. B" to his teachers, he was highly regarded for his fairness and commitment to his "kids" some 40-50 years after he was their "Coach" or principal. A trip out for breakfast always meant several folks stopping by to say "hello". On June 18, 1977, he married the former Marjorie Adams Chambers. His family grew with the addition of two step-daughters, Carol Chambers and Cheryl (Ray) Hoffman. These children gave him three more grandchildren, David Chambers Rossitter, and Kaley and Robert Hoffman. Howard loved his Church and his God and was active as an elder and deacon in the First Presbyterian Church of Apopka. Howard was a former member of the Apopka Rotary Club and a Paul Harris fellow. He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge in Apopka. He belonged to the Orange County Retired Educators Association. Memorial donations to memorial fund of First Presbyterian Church of Apopka or the American Heart Association. Visitation will be 4-6PM Wednesday, August 27, 2008 and the Memorial service will be 6-7PM all at the First Presbyterian Church of Apopka, 500 South Highland Avenue, Apopka, FL 32703.
