Margaret was born August 6, 1927 to Anton and Margaret (Bullinger) Leingang in Morton County near St. Anthony. At the age of 2 they moved to a farm south of Solen where she was raised and educated, graduating from the 8th grade at a rural school near Solen.
On June 6, 1951 she married John V. Schaf in Fort Yates, ND. Collecting Holstein cows was a favorite hobby of hers. A proud moment was when she made the news, “Off the Beaten Path with Cliff Naylor”. While enjoying cooking, she made sure no one would leave hungry. If you came to visit, you got a meal, and you better be sure to eat or she’d be upset. Christmas baking was a favorite time, especially when the grandchildren came. Baking bread twice a week, she would warn the kids if they ate too much of the dough, their butts would stick together. German food, dumplings, and fry bread with chocolate were everyone’s favorite. Margaret’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy.
Margaret will be deeply missed by her 12 children, Wayne (Bernice) Schaf of Mandan, Curt Schaf of Solen, Della (Jim) Helbling of Bismarck, Pearl (Murray) Ereth of Mandan, Clyde Schaf of Mandan, Sonia (Gary) Ozbun of Mandan, Daryl (Darlene) Schaf of Mandan, Valerie (Rich) Ternes of Mandan, Yvonne (Mark) Ereth of Mandan, Dwight Schaf of Mandan, Lynette (John) Schmidt of Solen, Michelle Schaf of Mandan; 23 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one sister, Josephine Ressler of Mandan; two sisters-in-law, Eileen Schaf and Marie Schaf; one brother-in-law, Jim O’Dell; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents; one infant daughter, Sylvia; five sisters, Anna Schwengler, Clara Eisenbeis, Bertha Magilke, Appolonia Kary and Lula O’Dell; and ten brothers, Nick, Ed, Alex, George, John, Tony, Adam, Ralph, Jacob and Francis
