Peter was born January 30, 1922, the eldest of 7 children to Anton and Monica (Schaaf) Schmaltz, in Chandler, ND. He grew up on a farm 10 miles N of Haynes, ND. He graduated from Hettinger High school in 1941, playing both football and baseball while there.
On March 4th, 1946, he married Marian Schatz. To this union 2 children were born, Paulette in 1946 and Gary in 1949. In 1947, together with his wife they bought a farm 17 miles north of Hettinger and lived there until their retirement in 2002. On the farm/ranch they raised registered cattle, sheep and hogs. In 1958, he won outstanding young farmer of North Dakota for his accomplishment. They bought a home in Hettinger and lived there for 5 years before moving into Western Horizons Assisted living facility and then Hillcrest Care Center, where Marian died n 2009.
In October of 2009, Peter was moved to Rapid City. He was lovingly cared for by the compassionate staff of Clarkson Care Center until his death on September 13, 2012. They appreciated his "adventurous" spirit, and nourished his charm, his wit and his sense of humor. He had a soft heart, crying easily, but he could also be "tough as nails". He loved his family, his church, and his animals. He was a farmer in his soul. He loved family gatherings and the very competitive family football game for the traveling "Champion of The World" trophy. He found the inevitable arguments that would always ensue especially humorous, and would sometimes unsuccessfully try to be a referee. He loved sports, especially football, and traveled to all of his grandchildren's events that scheduling would allow. He danced at his grandchildren's weddings and delighted in his great grandchildren's visits. He will always be missed.
Left to morn his passing and celebrate his life are his daughter, Paulette (Larry) Merwin, Baker, Mt., son, Gary, Lead, SD, 5 grandchildren, Rob (Ariana) Merwin, Mesa AZ, Justin Schmaltz, Bismarck, ND, Joshua (Jen) Schmaltz, Rapid City, SD, John (Kristin) Merwin, Mesa, AZ and Marnie (Matt) Moberg, Maryville, MO.
