  [S927] Obituary. Verna Eileen Heizelman, 77, rural Velva, died Sunday, June 2, 2013 in a Minot Nursing Home. Verna was born April 10, 1936 at Rugby, North Dakota the daughter of Frederick and Inga (Braaten) Hjella. She was raised and educated at Rugby and graduated from Rugby High School in 1954. She attended Trinity School of Nursing in Minot and received a registered nursing degree. Verna was united in marriage to Elmer Heizelman on June 1, 1958 at Rugby. They made their home in Minot, where she continued her employment at Trinity Hospital until 1959. They raised their three children in Minot, until moving to rural Velva in 1967. She continued her employment at Trinity Hospital for three years, and then with the Souris Valley Care Center as an RN for 17 years, and later as a resident assistant. She had also served Velva as the Hospice contact nurse. She retired from nursing in 2000. Verna was a member of the Bible Fellowship Church in Minot, where she also taught Bible School and Sunday School. She also served on the Velva School Library Board and the Velva Township Board. She did volunteer work for the Souris Valley Care Center and RSVP. She enjoyed traveling, knitting, scrapbooking, reading and walking. Her loving family includes, husband of fifty-five years, Elmer; children, Brian (Denise) Heizelman, Buhler, KS, Brent (Jody) Heizelman, Lindsborg, KS, Dawn (Larry) Raudebaugh, Spokane, WA; grandchildren, Emily, Erin, Austyn, Corynn, Rees, Meka and Kiara; sister, Florence Crawford, Rugby, ND; several niece and nephews. Verna was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Marion Hanson and Esther Haagenson. Funeral service: Thursday, June 6, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in First Baptist Church, Minot. Graveside service: Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in the Mennonite Brethren Cemetery, rural Sawyer, ND. Visitation: Wednesday from 3:00-7:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00-7:00 p.m in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot. In lieu of flowers or plants the family prefers memorials to the Bible Fellowship Church, Gideon’s or Child Evangelism Fellowship.
