Obituary for Marvin Eugene Berreth
Absent from the body, present with the Lord.
Marvin Eugene Berreth (82) went home to be with his Lord and Savior, suddenly, on the evening of Friday, March 3 because of a heart attack.
He was born November 13, 1934, the eldest of three children, to Eugene and Lora (Fife) Berreth, near Highmore, SD. The family lived in many places in the Dakotas, Iowa and Minnesota. Marvin graduated from Grand Meadow High School in Grand Meadow, IA in 1952. He entered the Army the following year and served in Europe for 3 years before returning to South Dakota to earn a Bachelor’s of Mechanical Engineering at South Dakota State College in Brookings, SD. On June 7, 1956, he and Marjory were married at Olivet, SD.
He started his engineering career at John Deere in Des Moines, IA. In 1962, he relocated to Rochester, MN and had a 25 year career at IBM. When he retired from there, he spent the next 9 years teaching STEM courses at RCTC. He then took up another career as a Small Engine Mechanic. He worked at that job even until the day of his death.
He was a member of the Rochester Covenant Church, the History Center of Olmsted County, the Mechanical History Round Table, and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marjory; daughter Barbara (Chuck) VanHavermaet and his son Brian (Lynn) Berreth. Four Grandsons: Benjamin, Daniel and Samuel VanHavermaet and Jacob Berreth. One brother; Richard (Beth) Berreth and one sister; Marilyn (Lester) Hehr.
Marv lived a life of service to God and others. He will be truly missed.
Burial will be at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Preston, MN on Tuesday afternoon, March 7. The memorial service celebrating Marvin’s life will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 8 at the Rochester Covenant Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
