Life Legacy
Susan M. Bender, age 42, of rural Fulton, SD died Monday at home under hospice care after a 3 year battle with cancer. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM Saturday at the Hanson High School Auditorium with burial at Graceland Cemetery in Fulton, SD. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Friday at St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church in Alexandria, SD. A rosary will begin at 6:40 PM followed by a wake service beginning at 7:00 PM Friday.
Sue M. Bender, daughter of James and Lucile (Hayslip) Schieffer, was born June 17, 1965 in Mitchell, SD. She grew up and attended school in Mitchell, graduating from Mitchell High School in 1983. After high school, Sue lived and attended classes in Sioux Falls, SD. She returned to Mitchell in the mid 1980s and began working at Toshiba.
Sue was united in marriage with Rob Bender on February 14, 1991 in Mitchell, SD. After their marriage, Sue was a stay at home mother and raised the couples children. When their youngest child began school, Sue began working at Avera Brady Health and Rehab as a nurses aid. Later she earned her two year nursing degree from Dakota Wesleyan University. In July of 2004, Sue was employed at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital as a nurse on the surgical floor. She continued to be employed as a nurse at Avera Queen of Peace until March of 2007.
She was a member of St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church in Alexandria, SD and a former member of the Pierre Creek Trail Riders and the Heart and Sole Cancer Walk. Sue enjoyed horseback riding, showing horses, sewing, cooking, camping and riding her Harley Davidson motorcycle.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Rob Bender, Fulton, SD; five children, Samantha Bender, Patrick Bender, Jacob Bender, Tristan Bender and Savannah Bender, all of Fulton, SD; her father, James Schieffer and his wife, Joan, Mitchell, SD; her mother, Lucile Schieffer, Sioux Falls, SD; her in-laws, Lloyd and Jane Bender, Fulton, SD; a brother, Jim Schieffer and his wife Jacqui, Grand Rapids, MI; two sisters, Kathy Young, Mitchell, SD and Mary Pahnisch and her husband, Tom, Sioux Falls, SD; three sister-in-laws, Christie Ellison and her husband, Jeff, Springfield, MO, Betsy Tobin and her husband, Matt, Fulton, SD, Barbie Janssen and her husband, Jay, St. Bonifacius, MN; three step sisters, Lori Schoenfelder and her husband, Gary, Mitchell, SD, Sandy Long and her husband, Ron, Mt. Vernon, SD, Kristi Moody and her husband, Marty, Mt. Vernon, SD; a step-brother, Jim Stekl, Sioux Falls, SD; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Samantha Sue Bender on July 10, 2006; a niece Cara Pahnisch; grandparents, Genevieve Rehorst, Sam and Louise Hayslip and Ted and Clara Hasse.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Sue Benders name at Fulton State Bank.
