Bio: Obituary for Mary CloseMary Skaramuca Close, age 92, of Aberdeen, Wash. passed away on Friday, Sept. 25, 2015 at Community Hospital. She was a direct decedent of the pioneering Fry family. Mary was born on the family farm in the upper Wynooche Valley on March 14, 1923 to John and Bernice (Fry) Quinn. She attended the two room Wynooche School as did her nine siblings. When she advanced to the Montesano upper class she was placed one grade ahead of her peers. Mary always said that the two room school was an asset, as she not only finished her assignments but also listened to her older brothers lectures and completed their school work. After graduating from Montesano High School, she attended and completed a business curriculum in Seattle. Her business degree gave her the opportunity to work in the office for Clemons Logging Company in Melbourn, Wash., for Whitney’s in Montesano and for other local companies. To the day of her passing, she was “sharp” with figures and with money. It was always a family trick to try to short change her a dime or a dollar after purchasing her weekly grocery items. Within three or four minutes she would say, “where is the remainder of my change?” In 1943, she married Evan “John” Skaramuca in Montesano, Wash. Again, she was the accountant for their business. They owned the Richfield Service Station (where the Outdoor Electrical Montesano shopping center sign is located); Skaramuca Fuel, Independent Feed & Seed and developed the Atlantic-Richfield Service Station (known today as the 76 Station). They built the commercial building on Wynooche Avenue (which houses the Wynooche Meat & Deli). They had a son, R. Bruce Skaramuca, in 1947. In 1970, John passed and Mary sold all on the developments and retired. In 1978, she remarried. Her second husband, John “Jack” Close was a retired Aberdeen attorney, together, they travelled the United States, New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific Islands. They wintered in Honolulu and summered both in Aberdeen and on the Hood Canal. Jack died in 2002. Mary was always the adventuress. She drove powder puff for her cousins, the Carter’s. She won her initial first place trophy in 1955 and retired from driving after winning her final first place trophy in 1960. She was an Evergreen Racing Association undefeated powder puff champion for six years in a row. Mary was preceded in death by her seven older siblings. She is survived by her two younger siblings, Melba Whitehall and Bob Quinn, both of Montesano, her son, R. Bruce Skaramuca, daughter-in-law Dana A. Skaramuca and two grandsons, Dalyn B. Skaramuca and Rory B. Skaramuca, all of Montesano. She is also survived by her good friend Yuki Warden of Aberdeen. Upon her wish, no public service is scheduled. A private graveside service for her immediate family has been scheduled at the Wynooche Cemetery. Mary would like for you to make a donation to your favorite charity in lieu of flowers or cards.Arrangements have been entrusted to Harrison Family Mortuary, 311 W. Market Street in Aberdeen, Wash.
