Richard G. Brophy, 92, of Burke, Va., formerly of New York City, passed away Monday, June 29, 2009, in Fair Oaks Hospital, Fairfax, Va. He was born July 13, 1916, in Carrolltown, the son of Francis J. and Stella (Quinn) Brophy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Leona L. (Rodgers) Brophy, on Aug. 24, 2007; and siblings, Mary Wirtner, Milburg Brophy, Francis Jr., Paul, David, John and Timothy Brophy. He is survived by his children, Eileen Brophy and Richard Brophy Jr., both of Burke, Va.; and also by several nieces and nephews. Richard was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was a great-great-great-grandson of Capt. Michael McGuire, of Revolutionary War fame, and also an officer in George Washington's army. Capt. McGuire as the first settler of Cambria County, who also bequeathed land to Bishop John Carroll, of Baltimore. Richard attended St. Benedict School and graduated from Carrolltown High School. Richard was a retired motion picture film editor who began his film career in 1930 with RKO Pictures. He was then drafted into the Army at the beginning of World War II and was assigned to the film department, where he spent all of World War II in New York City working on Army films and documentaries. He was instrumental in opening the Army Pictorial Center on the site of the old Paramount Studios. He then began his TV and commercial film work in the late 1940s, where he worked on many notable films and documentaries during his almost 50 year career, including being film editor of the 1969 film, "The Honeymoon Killers." The film was named one of the 10 best films of the year by the New York Times. It is also on the Blockbuster Video list of the 100 Greatest Films of all time. Famed French film director Francois Truffaut called it his favorite American film. His second career was entertaining by playing jazz and blues on the piano in New York City night clubs. He was a member of Church of the Nativity, Burke, Va. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the STEVENS FUNERAL HOME INC., 146 N. Main St., Carrolltown, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Benedict Catholic Church, Carrolltown, by the Rev. Jude W. Brady, OSB. Committal service will be at the church cemetery, with military graveside rites accorded by local veterans organizations. www.stevensfh.com.
