John was born Dec. 6, 1929, to Jack and Philomena (Kautzman) Ferderer in Morton County. He attended school in Morton County and worked on the family farm.
On June 2, 1958, John married the love of his life, Caroline Martin, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bismarck. They settled on the family farm, raising 10 children. John worked hard taking care of his family along with raising cattle and small grain crops. They were members of St. Vincent’s Catholic Church, Crown Butte. He enjoyed being a member of the St. Vincent’s Men’s Verein, Knight’s of Columbus, Eagles Club and Moose Club.
In the spring of 1990, John retired from farming and began driving the mail truck for BECO. John enjoyed his daily route from Bismarck to Zeeland, and the many friends that he made; playing cards and spending time at the senior center in Zeeland. John also worked at Support Systems Inc. for five years, as a companion to seniors. He enjoyed playing cards and pool with them and sharing stories of the good ole days.
John and Caroline were fond of taking family trips with their children to Medora, Billings, Mont., Black Hills, and to the Garrison Dam. John and Caroline could often be found dancing and playing cards with friends and family. Many remember playing pinochle with John, and he always had a deck of cards with him. John made the best pork sausage! He had a passion for farming and after moving to Mandan and later to Bismarck, he placed that passion in his garden. John loved to fish, and when he wasn’t gardening, he could be found on the shoreline fishing with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling to Arizona and California, visiting his daughters and their families.
John passed on his strong Catholic faith, importance of family, and hard work to his children and grandchildren.
Grateful to have shared his life with him is his wife of 58 years; eight daughters, Julie (Don) Wald, Bismarck, Jane (Corey) Walth, Bismarck, Debbie (Steve) Schmalz, Bismarck, Diane (Keith) Berger, Bismarck, Janet (Robert) Jones, Elk Grove, Calif., Donna (Darin) Starck, Mandan, Jolene (Patrick) Tormey, San Tan Valley, Ariz., and Dawn (Bruce) Schumacher, Bismarck; two sons, Darin (Cathy) Ferderer, Bismarck, and Jeremy; 20 grandchildren, Shana Heinrich, John (Lindsey) Heinrich, Sierra Heinrich, Mike (Traci) Wald, Robin (Dan) Sedevie, Brittany (Brandon) Mortenson, Tanner Frohlich, Brook Frohlich, Lane Berger, Logan Berger, Jeran Carter, Alyssa Jones, Brad Starck, Nicole (Sebastian) Jacobs, Madison Ferderer, Megan Ferderer, Nathan Schumacher, Allison Schumacher, Isaac Schell and Korri Ferderer; 12 great-grandchildren; his sister, Mary (Ottmar) Barth; and his brother, Ernie (Linda) Ferderer, Phoenix, Ariz.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his mother-in-law and father-in-law; one sister, Kathleen Himmelspach; one brother-in-law, Pete Himmelspach; an infant sister; and two infant daughters.
The family wishes to express their sincere and deep gratitude to CHI St. Alexius Home Health, especially to John (RN), and to the staff at the Transitional Care Unit for their loving care for John.
