Matheis was born May 7, 1950 in Osage, Iowa, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Matheis, Adams. Pfc. Matheis was serving with United States military forces in Cambodia at the time of his death. He was killed in hostile enemy action on May 8, 1970. He entered military service on June 26, 1969, and went to Vietnam November 22, 1969.Funeral services were held May 19 at St. John's Catholic Church, Johnsburg, with Father John Mountain officiating. Interment was in St. John's Cemetery, with Adams Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.He attended St. John's grade school and Adams High School, and was a member of St. John's Sodality. He was employed by Osmundson Bros. from the time he graduated from high school until he entered the Army.Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Matheis, Adams; a brother, Gerald, Adams; 3 sisters, Mrs. John L. Wagner (Joyce), Adams; Mrs. Roger (Shirley) Gordon, Austin; and Carol, Adams; grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth Landherr; nephews, Ryan Gordon and Michael Wagner; uncles, aunts and cousins.Out-of-town people attending the funeral came from Austin, St. Paul, St. Charles, Winona, Fairmont, Hayfield, Rochester, Rose Creek and Brownsdale, Minn., Aberdeen, S.D.; San Diego, Calif.; Waterloo, Stacyville and Bancroft, Iowa.
