LAKE PLACID - Gerard J. Wegman, 88, of Marcellus, and formerly of Lake Placid, died Monday, Aug. 17, 2009 at home.
Born in Gates, he was the son of Edward and Eleanor Wegman. Gerard, his father and four brothers owned and operated Wegman Dairy in Rochester. He graduated from St. Augustine Grammar School and Aquinas Institute. Gerard attended Marquette University and Niagara University Extension in Rochester.
He was a member and past president of both the Lake Placid Knights of Columbus and Au Sable Forks Rotary. Gerard moved to Lake Placid in 1960, where he owned and operated AuSable Dairy and was a Communicant of St. Agnes Church. In 1972, he moved to Marcellus, continuing in the milk business, and was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church, Marcellus, where he was a lector.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years, the former Harriet Walton; children: Virginia McDaniel, Elaine (Philip) LaDue, Peter (Helen), Patrick, Martin (Susan) and Bernard; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Gerard was predeceased by his daughter Marigrace and granddaughter Mandi.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21 at the Ryan Funeral Home, 44 E. Main St., Marcellus. Services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22 at the funeral home, and a funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. in St. Francis Xavier Church.Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23 at St. Agnes Cemetery, Lake Placid.
Contributions may be made for masses to a church of choice or to St. Francis Xavier Church, PO Box 177, Marcellus, NY 13108.
