Joseph Hirschinger, 97, 135 Woodlawn, Quincy, died at 8:10 am March 10, 2002 in his home from complications of heart failure.
Joseph Hirschinger | Hansen-Spear Funeral Home – Quincy, IllinoisHe was born October 13, 1904 in Elwood, Indiana, the son of George Henry and Barbara Rupp Hirschinger. On June 27, 1931, he married Naomi W. Durkin in Decatur, Indiana. She preceded him in death on November 16, 1995.
The Hirschingers came to Quincy in 1934 when Joe became manager of the Western Union office here; he retired from the company in 1962 and thereafter organized the Quincy Area Safety Council, retiring from that position as executive secretary in 1967.
Mr Hirschinger was active in a number of civic efforts in Quincy. In 1934 he joined the Rotary Club of Quincy; he maintained perfect weekly attendance at Rotary meetings for over 50 years and served as club president and secretary (a position he held for over 40 years). Additionally, Mr Hirschinger was elected District Governor for Rotary for the 1947-48 term; he also completed another term as governor in 1969-1970. Joe served the organization on an international level in a number of capacities, representing the local club at many international conventions on this continent. Rotary honored Mr. Hirschinger as a Paul Harris Fellow in 1972. Joe, often referred to as “Mr. Rotary,” remained active in the club until his death.
Other civic interests include: North Side Business Men’s Association, Adams County Civil Defense Commission, March of Dimes, Knights of Columbus (former Grand Knight), Quincy Traffic Commission, St. Peter’s Men’s Club, Adams County Farm Bureau, Adams County U.S. Selective Service, Saukee Area Boys Scouts, Salvation Army, Great River Road Committee and the Morse Telegraph Club.
His interests included fishing (all 48 states and Canada), hunting, photography, wood carving, and electronics.
Survivors include a daughter, Theresa Kearney and her husband Albert, Glenview, IL; 2 sons, Ted Hirschinger and his wife Alice, Fulton, MO; Tom Hirschinger and his wife Lucy, Wadsworth, Ohio; six grandchildren, Patrick Hirschinger, Joan Latham and her husband Charles, Michele Albaugh and her husband Stephen, all of Fulton, MO, Sara Hirschinger, Kansas City, Karen Hirschinger, Columbia, MO, Joseph Kearney, Glenview, IL; 6 great grandchildren; one brother, Lawrence Hirschinger. He also was preceded in death by his son Timothy, two sisters, Josephine Hirschinger, Catherine Schaler,and two brothers, George and Leo.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 13, 2002 at 9:30 am in the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home and at 10:00 am in St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Rev. Roy Bauer officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 4 pm – 8 pm at the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home with a Wake Service at 6:30 pm. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be given to St. Peter’s Catholic Church.
