Ernest E. Kempf was born on May 31, 1946, to Matt and Sophie (Kranzler) Kempf in Aberdeen. He grew up in rural Fredrick and attended Barnard High School, graduating in 1964. He worked at Safeguard before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in March 1966. He was Honorably Discharged in November 1969. In October 1967 Ernest married Linda Vining. Together, they had two children: Curtis and Wade. They were divorced in 1986.
Ernest married Christine Linderman on August 26, 2000. He welcomed her children: Tabitha, Chad, and Kevin into his life as well. They made their home on a hobby farm in Bath and enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting together. Ernest was a member of the Aberdeen Handgun Club and NRA. He enjoyed competitive shooting and building custom handguns.
In 2011, he retired after working 46 years at Hub City as a machinist. He continued to work part time at Twin City Fan, and later, Rideline until 2016 when he was forced to quit because of his health. He will be remembered as a proud, independent, “go-to” man.
