James D. McDermott, 76, of Slate Lick, passed away peacefully Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, at Fair Winds Manor in Winfield Township. Jim was born Feb. 25, 1937, in Natrona Heights. He was a son of the late Elizabeth (Calligan) and Roy McDermott. Jim was a member of St. Mary, Mother of God Church in Freeport. He worked as a machinist at Saxonburg Ceramics in Saxonburg and had also worked for 26 years at DuCo Ceramics in Saxonburg. Jim was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed working, traveling and going on cruises with his wife, Linda. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Linda K. (Laux) McDermott; his son, Gregory J. McDermott, of Alexandria, Va.; three daughters, Beth McDermott, of Slate Lick, Amy Jones, of South Buffalo Township, and Margie (Mark) Caughlan, of Fort Collins, Colo.; his "adopted" daughter, Stephanie Craven, of South Buffalo Township; his grandson, Grady Charles Caughlan; two nephews, Michael (Vicki) McDermott, of Albany, N.Y., and Ben Laux, of Wakefield, R.I.; and his niece, Melissa McDermott, of Erie. He was preceded in death by his brother, Michael McDermott; and his sister, Mary Ellen Hrivnak. Family and friends will be received 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, in the REDMOND FUNERAL HOME INC., 524 High St., Freeport. A parting prayer service will be held 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home and will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, 2013, in St. Mary Mother of God Church in Freeport, with Father Edward Volz officiating.
