OTTO ZELMER
The funeral service for Otto Zelmer, 88, Aberdeen, will be 10:30am, Friday, June 25, 2010 at Salem-Emmanuel Lutheran Church, with Pastor Erik Swanson officiating. Burial will be at Salem Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Long Lake, SD. Military Honors by American Legion Post #276. Otto died Monday, June 21, 2010 at Avera Mother Joseph Manor.
Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Thursday, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.
Otto Henry Zelmer was born July 20, 1921 to Edward and Anna Marie (Guthmiller) Zelmer near Long Lake, SD. This is the area where he grew up. He attended rural school until his parents moved to Long Lake in 1935, then finished grade school in town. He helped his father in the garage and farming, until he entered the Service in World War II on August 3, 1942, being with the Infantry Anti Tank Co. After his discharge on October 16, 1943, he farmed until he retired.
Otto was a member of Salem Emmanuel Lutheran Church and the American Legion. He enjoyed going on tours in the state and overseas. One of the greatest highlights was in seeing the Holy Land in 1993.
Grateful for having shared Otto's life are two brothers, Milbert (Marva Lou) Zelmer, Aberdeen, Edmund (Patricia) Zelmer, Olney, TX, two sisters, Adeline Zelmer, Aberdeen, Anna Marie (Wayne) Smith, Durant, OK, two nephews, Dennis Zelmer and David (Lynn) Smith, three nieces, Wanda Gonzalez, Karen (Ron) Erdmann, Nancy (Rob) Schultz, five grandnephews and seven grandnieces.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward & Anna Marie Zelmer, brother, Arthur Zelmer, sister, Alma Weishaar and niece, Kari Marie Dutton.
