Birth: 1888
Death: 1982
Lillie was the third of four children born to Moses Beyler and Matilda Zimmer, who married on 27 Jan 1881 in Marshall County, Indiana. Their four children were son Alvin E. (b. 11 Oct 1881), Ada E. (b. 7 Oct 1885), Lillie Aurora (b. 10 Mar 1888), and Ruth B. (b.Feb 1894).
Sadly, the year after her sister Ruth's birth, Lillie' father Moses died in 1895 at age 36. Matilda managed their four young children on her own for about two years before she remarried, exchanging vows with Henry Miller on 19 Jan 1898 in Marshall County. It was also a second marriage for Henry.
I found the family on the 1900 Census, living in Plymouth, Marshall County, Indiana, where Henry Miller, aged 45, was doing farm labor. Matilda, aged 39, reported that she had had four children, and that all had survived to that census. Indeed, living with the couple were the four Beyler children, identified as Henry's step-children--Alvin, aged 18, Ada, aged 14, Lillie, aged 12, and Ruth, aged 6.
In 1910, the family was living at 513 E. Garro St. in Plymouth. Henry, aged 56, was working his own farm. Matilda, aged 19, again reported that all four of her four children were alive. Still living at home with their mother and step-father were Lillie, aged 22 and working as a bookkeeper at a creamery, and Ruth, aged 16, still a student.
Lillie's older siblings had married. Older brother Alvin had married Petronella Strombeck on 25 Apr 1905. Petronella was the daughter of John Otto Strombect and Elna Olson. Lillie's older sister Ada married Raymond O. Schlosser on 4 May 1907. He was the son of Phillip Schlosser and Sarah Alice Holderman. Both of their marriages took place in Marshall County.
On 11 Mar 1911, Lillie married Harry Cyrus Stair in Marshall County. He was 28, she had just turned 23 the day before. They would have nine children together. Their first two children do not appear to have survived their infancy, as according to his 1995 obit, son Victor Irvin, born on 6 Feb 1915, was their third child of nine. Victor was followed by Raymond circa 1917, Rose Amelia on 19 Jan 1920, Virginia in 1921, who died the following year in 1922, Vera R. circa 1924, Vida E. in 1927, and Tressie M. circa 1929.
On his 12 Sep 1918 WWI registration, Harry, aged 35, reported that he was living and farming in Marshall County, and gave wife Lillie as his closest relative. He described himself as of medium height, of slender build, with grey eyes and brown hair.
I found Harry’s family on the 1920 Census, living in North Township (today part of Plymouth). Harry, aged 37, was busy with the farm. Lillie, aged 31, was home with their two young sons Victor, aged 4, and Raymond, aged 2. Daughter Virginia would join the family the following year, but they would lose her soon after.
In 1930, the family was still living in Plymouth’s North Township. Harry, aged 47, was busy farming. Lillie, aged 42, was keeping house, a house full of children—Victor, aged 15, Raymond, aged 12, Rose, aged 10, Vera, aged 6, Vida, aged 3, and Tressie, aged 1.
In 1940, the family was zoned into Plymouth’s Center Township, suggesting that they may have moved. Harry, aged 57, was still actively farming. Lillie, aged 52, was at home. Still there with their parents were Victor, aged 25, Rose, aged 20, Vera, aged 16, Vida, aged 13, and Tressie, aged 11.
On his 1942 WWII registration, Harry, aged 59, indicated that he was self-employed, and gave Lillie as his contact person.
On 30 Aug 1943, Harry and Lillie’s daughter Rose married Watson Goodman. They would bring four grandchildren into Harry and Lillie’s life—Victoria Raye, Donald, Ruth Estelle, and Harry Woodrow.
Son Victor married on 1 Apr 1945, exchanging vows with Thelma Irene Bennett, the daughter of Larry Arment Bennett and Ruth Mabel Thomas. They two would bring four grandchildren into Harry and Lillie’s world—Charles Watson, Roger, Rosemarie and Tom.
I could not find records after 1940 for Harry and Lillie’s other children. In daughter Rose’s obit, it indicates that son Raymond died sometime before 2006, but that daughters Vera, Vida and Tressie were still living.
Harry died ten days before Christmas on 15 Dec 1951 at age 69. I do not yet have a death year for Lillie.
