Betty "Jean" Woodrum
Betty “Jean” Woodrum
August 13, 1927 - June 15, 2017
On June 15, 2017, Jean Woodrum joined our father in heaven.
Born Betty Jean Fyock to Paul and Cora Fyock on August 13, 1927, the second child of five children and the last to survive, died peacefully at her home with her family by her side at age 89.
Always a hard worker, Jean joined the cause during WWII as an overhead welder in the ship yards. Going to school part of the week and welding the rest of the week, she was one of 10 welders after the war, asked to stay on as a permanent welder.
She chose to finish high school instead. She had stated that she was always upset because the shipyard would not allow her to ride on the ship she had helped build at launch, since she was a woman. Then she would roll her eyes and say, “It was bad luck!”
Jean graduated 1946 from Hubbard High School. She moved to Salem, Ore., where she met the love of her life Mel Woodrum. They married on November 3, 1949. Jean and Mel had five children, Danny, Monte, Rick, Debbie and Julie. She raised her children unconditionally with love, morals and values that were carried on to her 12 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. She so loved her family and all of her grandchildren that she just could not get enough of them.
Jean’s true passion was art. She was a great artist, her paintings are surreal. Being so creative and talented, she could make anything out of nothing. She also was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed crocheting. She always took time to teach you anything and everything if you wanted to know how to do something. She was also an excellent cook, “Moms food was always the best.” She always welcomed everyone into her home, and the number one thing she would ask is, “Are you hungry?”
She and Mel went all over the world together throughout their married life. She enjoyed trying all the different cuisines, seeing how all the different cultures lived, and the history of different countries. But her favorite place to travel was the Oregon Coast-she loved the ocean; so many memories there. She was so adventurous, never scared to try or do anything. She loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, gardening and camping. If it was outdoors, she loved it. She also had a great passion for Indian culture and artifacts.
She will be truly missed with her great sense of humor, her hugs, laughter, knowledge and beating us all at Scrabble. She was a complete joy to her family and friends. She is now rejoined with her husband Mel, sons Monte and Rick, on a new adventure traveling a new world together.
Please join us with a celebration of life on Saturday, June 24, at 2 p.m., United Methodist Church Wasco, Ore. Potluck reception after services.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked people to please donate to: Shriners Children’s Hospital Jean Woodrum Memorial 3101 SW Sam Jackson Park Road Portland, Ore. 97239.
