Anton “Tony” Meuchel, 81, of Missoula passed away Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011, at Riverside HealthCare Center surrounded by his family.
He was born Nov. 2, 1929, in Glen Ullin, N.D., to Angelina Kary and Lucas Meuchel. He was one of 15 children reared on a farm, 22 miles south of town.
On Oct. 17, 1950, Tony married Eleanor Renner at St. Joe Church south of Glen Ullin. He was a farm and ranch hand with area land owners before moving and farming the family homestead. Later he drilled test holes with an oil-drilling crew and then became a dozer operator for road construction. Four children were born during this period.
In 1957, Tony and Ellie moved the family westward; ultimately stopping in Missoula. In 1960, their last son was born. Tony began his 33 year career in the lumber industry working at White Pine and Elk Horn Lumber; eventually becoming a saw filer and retiring from Champion.
Tony and Ellie enjoyed traveling in their motor-home; camping and fishing with family and friends. Tony always had a good story or joke to tell; he loved a good laugh. He also loved dancing, especially the polka, and attending accordion festivals. Tony had a life-long passion for pinochle and cribbage. Over the years he made numerous wood crafts. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a big part of his life as he followed their many activities. Most recently he joined the senior center taking great pleasure in the many functions and friendships; meeting his special friend Ella Kay Johnson.
Tony leaves behind loved ones that include daughter Patricia (Rick) Flink of Whitefish; sons Dennis (Mary) Meuchel, Donald (Brenda) Meuchel, Dean Meuchel and partner, Mary Kay Wedgwood, all of Missoula, and Duane (Amy) Meuchel of Beaverton, Ore. Also 11 grandchildren, Richard (Michonne) Flink, Ronald (Samantha) Flink, Mathew (Joey) Meuchel, Melanie Meuchel, Jasmine (Tadd) Olson, Rochelle (Tom) Benton, Kevin (Stephanie) Meuchel, Tracy Meuchel, Stephen Meuchel and partner Keri Willard, Emma Lee (Marcus) Starr, Annie Meuchel; and 18 great-grandchildren. Additional loved ones include his brother and sisters, Reynold (Karen) Meuchel, Angie (Andy) Galligan, Regina Hawes, and sister-in-law Betty Meuchel of Oregon, sister Florence (Ralph) Veitenheimer of Washington, and sisters Barbara Schaff, Eleanor Wagner, Germaine (Kenny) Sibla, Loreine Geck, Caroline (Leonard) Opp; sisters-in-law Rose Meuchel and Irma Jakubowsky, and brothers-in-law Edward (Theresa) Renner and James (Theresa) Renner of North Dakota, and sister-in-law Alice (Roy) Thomas and family of Missoula and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
