Doris Buckley, 89, died March 1, 2010, in her Bismarck home. At her request, a private family service will be held Friday in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.
Doris was born in Berthold on April 4, 1920. She moved to Bismarck at age 14 to live with her sister, Esther Manley. Doris graduated from Bismarck High in 1938. After graduation, Doris began working at Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. and worked there until 1956. Doris also worked for the General Service Administration in Bismarck until her retirement in 1988.
Doris married Joseph "Buck" Buckley, on May 14, 1945, at St. Mary's Church, Bismarck. Buck and Doris were inseparable. They loved to travel, go camping, fishing and ride their matching black Harleys. They enjoyed their lives together until Buck's death in 2004.
Family was most important to Doris. She felt that her family was her greatest treasure and spent every minute that she could with those she loved. Doris loved her grandchildren with all of her heart and followed all of their lives with love. She rarely missed a school event or program. Doris looked forward to birthdays and holidays with excitement. She made sure that they were celebrated with her personal touch. Doris loved spending time with her daughter. They were best friends in every sense.
Doris was "one of a kind." She was smart, funny, gracious and caring. She was always stylish and made sure never to dress her age. She was proud to be the "hip" grandmother. Doris loved to garden and was able to grow amazing roses. She could always be found in her backyard enjoying her garden. Doris loved to read. She read all genre of books and magazines, but secretly held Danielle Steele novels in high regards. She loved to travel. She enjoyed seeing new places and she always traveled with her whole family in tow. She considered life to be an adventure. Doris joined the family in South America while in her 70s. She wanted to meet her grandchildren and welcome them into the family, and she wanted to see the country of their birth. There was always someplace new on the horizon.
Doris cherished her friends and enjoyed their company. She made sure to keep in touch and keep up with their lives. Friends were very important to her.
Doris lived her life to the fullest and will be deeply missed by the family that she loved so dearly. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jo and Larry Brekke; and her grandchildren, Connor and Hollyn Brekke.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Buckley; her beloved sister, Esther Manley; and a granddaughter, Madison Brekke.
