Birth: Feb. 28, 1905 Death: Sep. 3, 2001 Devils Lake Ramsey County North Dakota, USA The funeral for George Schmaltz, 96, of Devils Lake, formerly of Minnewaukan, was held Sept. 7 at 2 p.m. at St. James Catholic Church in Minnewaukan. Burial was in the church cemetery. He died Sept. 3, 2001 at Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake. Fr. Matt Lanz was celebrant. The Gilbertson Funeral Home of Devils Lake was in charge of arrangements. George Schmaltz was born Feb. 28, 1905 at Brazil to Phillip and Katherine Gange Schmaltz. He was raised and educated at Rugby. On July 21, 1930 he married Mary Agatha Dexheimer in Velva. They established their home on a farm near Thorne, where they farmed until April 1945. They then moved to Churchs Ferry and farmed. She died Aug. 16, 1955. In 1964 he moved to Minnewaukan, where he owned and operated the tastee freez for 2 years. He became a resident of the Odd Fellows Home in Devils Lake on Jan. 28, 2000. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Minnewaukan and the Eagles Aerie in Devils Lake. Survivors include six daughters and four sons-in-law, Irene and Paul Streifel of Minnewaukan, Lucille and Warren Anderson of Devils Lake, Marion Thompson of Motley, Minn., Georgia and Allerd Seboe of Park River, Margaret and Raymond Heisler of Golden, Colo. and Jeanette Heisler of Arvada, Colo.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Phillip and Linda Schmaltz of Devils Lake, Charles and Julie Schmaltz of Park River and Daniel and Nikki Schmaltz of Fargo; 30 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Christine Kraft, Katherine Gilmore, Mary Brossart and Margaret Rocheleau, all of Rugby.
