Sister M. Hildegarde Schaan, 88, died June 28, 2010 at Sacred Heart Convent, Fargo, ND. Mary Magdalene Schaan was born March 26, 1922, the eighth child of Stephina Hoffart Schaan and Mathias Schaan. Her early education was with the Sisters of St. Benedict in Garrison and she graduated from Sacred Heart Academy.
Magdalene entered the Presentation Order of Sisters in 1941 and received the name, Sister Mary Hildegard. She made profession of final vows in 1944.
Sister Hildegard earned a baccalaureate degree in education from the College of St. Catherine and studied at Sacred Heart College in Fargo and Loras College in Dubuque. She taught primary grades at St. Mary’s, Holy Spirit, and Nativity schools in Fargo, and at St. James Academy in New Rockford. During the summers and for one year she worked as a laboratory and x-ray technician at the Park River hospital. She also taught at Friendship and tutored in the Giving and Learning program as well as doing volunteer work at Nativity School, Presentation Development Office, and Presentation Center.
Sister Hildegard is survived by the members of her religious community, by a brother Vincent (Betty), Langdon, a sister Irene Schneider, Devils Lake, and generations of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Sister Carmelita, OSB; Agnes; Sister Boniface, PBVM; Hildegard; and Helen Heilman; and her brothers, Nick, Anthony, John, Pius, and Thomas.
