Julia was born May 29, 1919 on the family farm near Balta, ND. She was the daughter of Valentine Walter and Rosa (Schiele) Schaan. She grew up on the family farm and helped her mother with the care of her younger siblings. She attended school in Balta. For five years during harvest season, she managed the cook car making three meals a day for her father’s workers on the thrashing crew. Then she went to Rugby to work for the Hornstein family as a nanny. She also worked at the Balta Post office. Julia met Edward Senger of Orrin at a dance. They were married in Balta on January 24, 1944. Besides being a full time mother to fifteen children and help running a farm, Julia was involved in a variety of different volunteer positions and organizations. Julia belonged to the Christians Mothers, Catholic Daughters of America, St. Cecilia Alter Society and volunteered for many different church activities in Devils Lake, Orrin, and Harvey. She taught CCD classes in Orrin and Harvey. Shortly after moving to Harvey in 1978 from the farm, Julia and her son, Rick, became involved in Cub Scouts and hosted weekly meetings. Julia volunteered at the St. Aloisius Nursing Home fixing hair on Thursday mornings. Julia and Edward hosted two foreign exchange students from Germany and Norway. Julia and Edward worked along with other parents in the Pierce and McHenry Counties for the rights of people with developmental disabilities through ARC. Julia and other mothers had school two days per week for these children in Rugby until they were allowed in public schools in 1972. After that she worked to improve the conditions and treatment of these children in public schools. As her daughter, Betty, became an adult, Julia along with Mr. Walter Filler saw another need for adults with development disabilities to have work and shelter within their home communities. In 1980 they started HAV-IT in Harvey. As a founding board member, Julia volunteered all her time to help HAV-IT become a viable agency. Julia was a loving, caring, and thoughtful mother and grandmother. She always remembered everyone’s favorite foods and birthdays. She loved cooking, gardening, playing pinochle and was a good seamstress. But, her true enjoyment was spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
