John P. Schaan

John P. Schaan, lifelong Balta and Rugby area resident, died Saturday, September 4, 2010, at the Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby with family at his side.Age 84, he was born the son of Valentine and Rosa (Schiele) Schaan in rural Balta on January 10, 1926.
John was raised farming in Balta along with nine of his brothers and sisters.He was a farmer in that same area throughout his life until retiring to Rugby in 1991 where he remained at home to his passing.It was a gift to him and source of pride that the farm he loved continues to be actively farmed by his sons.
Following high school, John served in the Army Air Corp during World War II. Upon honorable discharge in 1947, he returned to Balta and met Theresa Hornstein of Rugby who would become his wife.The expression of his love for her was well-known and evident to his death.Theresa and John were married October 4, 1948, and after a brief period operating a gas station they began life together farming. Like many of his generation he worked hard to assure his farm provided while embracing his love for Theresa and family of ten children.
Service to his church and civic responsibility were important to John.He contributed through a number of organizations: Farmers Union Oil Board, Farmers Union Youth Instructor, 4H Leader, School Board Member & President, American Legion, Catholic Aid Association, CCD Instructor, Knights of Columbus, Eucharistic Minister, Cursillo, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish, Balta; and numerous other committees and groups. His activities and generosity in reaching out to the community, elderly, and church were an expression of his deep faith found through the Catholic Church.He wanted for everyone to know the joy of the grace of God that he found in the Church and witnessed through his wife Theresa.They found great reward in living their belief in God and the Church's teachings.
John is survived by ten children and their spouses: Roselyn & James Aipperspach, Des Moines, IA; Mark & Sue Schaan, Rugby; Susan & Rick Sudholt, Liberty, MO; Steven & Peggy Schaan, Fargo; Joyce Johansen (Rich McSorley), Hope; Kenneth & Marlene Schaan, Balta; Walter Schaan, Denver, CO; Paul & Jodi Schaan, Rugby; Terri & Tim Wald, White Bear Lake, MN; and John Schaan Jr., Rugby.
He found joy and great pride in his 27 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.Grandchildren: Ryan Aipperspach, David Aipperspach, San Francisco, CA; Joel Schaan (Christy), Toby Schaan (Gina), Minneapolis, MN; Mari Schaan, Anna Schaan, Las Vegas, NV; William Sudholt (Shannon), Tessa Rinker (Brett), Liberty, MO; Lucas Schaan, Jon Schaan, Minneapolis, MN; Jacob Schaan (Stacy), Deepa Schaan, Lakshmi Schaan, Usha Schaan, Fargo; Jennifer Frueh (Josh), Jessica Johansen, Nicholas Johansen, Fargo; Isaac Schaan, Rochester, MN; Riley Schaan (Erin), Rugby; Blake Schaan (Heather), Bismarck; Brett Schaan, Minneapolis, MN; Erica Parcel, Willmar, MN; Hunter Parcel, Rugby; and Taylor, Sawyer, and Jack Wald, White Bear Lake, MN. He is also survived by brothers Leo Schaan, Underwood, and Carl (Lois) Schaan, Rugby; sisters Martha (Daryl) Schlichenmayer, Las Vegas, NV, Christine (Ed) Bertsch, Fargo, Helen Klein, Fargo, and Bernie (John) Duchscher, Rugby; brothers-in-law Edward Senger, Harvey, and Alan Morrissey, Phoenix, AZ; and sister-in-law Lugard Schaan, Rugby.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Philip (1923) and Frank, sisters Julia Senger and Dorothy Morrissey, grandson Adam Johansen, brother-in-law Leo Klein, sister-in-law Dorothy Schaan, and his beloved wife Theresa (2002).Beyond love for his community and family, he would want as his legacy to encourage that all would enjoy the reward of a relationship with God.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, September 7, 2010, at Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby with burial in the church cemetery.
Fr. Tom Graner was celebrant and Fr. Bill Senger was concelebrant. Music was provided by Robert Graber, vocal leader/cantor, and Angie Deplazes, organist.
Military Honors were accorded by the Clarence Larson American Legion Post #23 Honor & Color Guard of Rugby and the North Dakota Funeral Honors Detail.
Casketbearers were Ryan Aipperspach, Anna Schaan, Bill Sudholt, Lakshmi Schaan, Nick Johansen, Isaac Schaan, Hunter Parcel, and Taylor Wald.
