Funeral mass was held Thursday, March 19, 2009 at Little Flower Catholic Church for Theresa Julianna Schaan, 82, Rugby, who died Sunday, March 15 at Trinity Medical Center in Minot.
Burial will be in the church cemetery in the spring.
Theresa was born Aug. 6, 1926 in the rural home of her parents in Tuscarora Township, Pierce County, the daughter of Joseph and Katherine (Miller) Schaan. She was raised in the rural Balta home of her parents and attended a country school near her home. She graduated from Balta High School in 1945. She completed her education at St. John's Hospital School of Nursing in Fargo, graduating as a registered nurse. Following college, she practiced nursing in several communities and states, including Michigan, Oregon, Minot, Rugby and Grafton. While living in Park River and working in Grafton, she was also a housekeeper for Father Ervin Zirbes for over 20 years. In 1987 she moved to Rugby.
She was a member of Little Flower Catholic Church.
She is survived by three sisters, Agnes Lucy, Harvey; Celestine Syverstad, Kent, Wash.; and Sister Mary Magdalen Schaan, Hankinson; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Sister Mary Anne Schaan; eight brothers, Jacob, Joseph, William, Frank, Peter, Daniel, Paul and Albert; and her parents.
Fr. Dan Syverstad was the celebrant. Organist was Glenda Mack, and vocal leader was Katrina Leier.
Casketbearers were Patrick Lucy, Matthew Fischer, Paul Lucy, Gary Kennedy, Sean Lucy and Gerald Lucy.
