Obituary for Carolyn Marie Sperle
Carolyn Sperle passed away at St Alexius Hospital on July 29, 2017, at the age of 101. Carolyn was the daughter of Peter G. and Elizabeth (Hellman) Kuhn. She was the youngest of three. She grew up on the family farm and attended elementary school in Kroeber District where she graduated. They lived a mile from school. She walked that many times. She loved going to school. In 1939, she was a clerk at the H. Mitzman General store for three years. In 1942, she went to Lompoc, Calif., where she was employed at the Johns Manville defense plant. Carolyn and her friend Opal were the first women to be hired at the brick plant because the boys were being drafted. When that Department closed after the war, Carolyn was transferred to the Laboratory where she worked until her marriage to Frank Sperle, son of John M. and Francisca (Becker) Sperle. They got married May 21, 1949, at the La Purisima Catholic Church, Lompoc, Calif. They came back and moved to his Dads farm. In 1953, they bought the former Bryant farm from Hollis Davenport where they farmed until they retired and purchased the Erwin Sievert home in Napoleon in 1983.
She belonged to St Philips Catholic Church, was an active member of the Christian Mothers in her younger years, sang in the choir, taught first grade religion for three years on Sundays, belonged to the Golden Age, and was a volunteer for many years at the Care Center. She was a member of the WIBC bowling league. She really enjoyed bowling with the team she belonged to from the start. In fact, a few years before she quit because she broke her wrist one day and the next day she fell and broke her other arm, she bowled a 234 at the age of 84. She loved to play cards with her friends and grandchildren. Carolyn walked a lot even at the age of 94 she still walked. She loved her family. Her grandchildren were very dear. Carolyn never forgot their birthdays, always sending a card and money. She was a compassionate, loving, caring and sharing individual.
Carolyn leaves her family, Kevin, Minneapolis, Mark (Teryl) Sperle, Tulsa Okla., and John (Diane) Sperle, Bismarck; seven grandchildren, Jamie (Roni Lynn) Sperle, Grand Forks, Nicole Sperle, Minneapolis, Amanda (Tyler) Hardage, Norman, Okla., and Daniel, Matthew, Anna and Peter Sperle, Tulsa, Okla.; and three great-grandchildren, Joshua and Evelyn Sperle and Ezra Hardage.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; her parents, Peter and Elizabeth (Hellman) Kuhn; her sister, Clementine (Ben); and her brother, John (Dorothy).
Services will be held at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church. Wake services will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. and a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 11.
In Lieu of flowers and cards, the family requests memorials be sent to Napoleon Care Center, 311 Fourth St., Napoleon, N.D. 58561, 701-754-2381.
