Birth: Apr. 25, 1909 Montgomery City Montgomery County Missouri, USA Death: Jul. 29, 1955 Cole County Missouri, USA The Chillicothe Constitution-Tribune Chillicothe, Missouri Monday, August 8, 1955 - Page 24: The body of Emil Hutsel, life term Missouri prison inmate, was found today on a farm adjoining the prison's Church Farm. The identification was made positive through fingerprints taken by State Highway Patrol technicians. Hutsel had been on the farm for about seven months. He was sentenced to prison in 1947 for the St. Louis County murder of his wife. He was reported missing from the farm July 29 when he failed to answer the pm roll call. Normally, when an inmate misses a formal count at the minimum security prison farm he is considered an escapee and peace officers are notified. That procedure was taken into effect when Hutsel failed to answer. Hutsel apparently had been dead over a week. Although his body had been mauled by pigs somewhat, investigators said he was killed by violence. The man's skull was crushed along the left side and there was at least one wound on the upper body. The man had been dead a week or more, officers said. The body was found by a farmer, Julius Brauner, on his farm just east of the prison farm. Brauner said he was astride one of a team of mules on his way to a bottom land field to work. He said one mule shied suddenly and he spied the body in a little draw under two scrub cedars. Brauner said he didn't stop the mule, just turned around and tried to call the state patrol from his home. But his telephone wouldn't work well so he had a neighbor drive him about five miles to Jefferson City. Scraps of prison clothing were draped across the man's shoe-clad feet. A piece of paper and a pocketknife were found in the pockets. The paper was apparently a prison commissary ticket, enabling the holder to make small purchases.
