A celebration of a life for Deacon Herman R. Dukart, 82, Dickinson, will be 10:00 a. m. , Tuesday, January 19, 2016, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Dickinson, ND with Father Russ Kovash celebrating. Burial will take place at Killdeer Cemetery. Visitation for Herman will be from 9:00 a. m. to 8:00 p. m. , Monday, January 18, 2016 at Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson, with a rosary and vigil being held at 7:00 p. m. Herman was born November 14, 1933 at the farm home of his grandfather, Xavier Dukart. His great -grandmother, Marianne Steiner Barth was the midwife. If you have been blest to know Herman, better yet, shake his hand – you would never have forgotten his powerful grip and grin, followed by a joke or story! Herman left this world to join with those who have gone before him. His granddaughter JohnnieRae (Dukart) Geving, his mother, Catherine (Heiser) Dukart to whom we are sure he will greet by dancing a polka with each of them. He will also embrace his father John X Dukart and sister Mildred Schmidt. He married Mary Kovash on Nov. 17, 1952. He assisted his dad with farming the first two years of their married life. Then two years at the Kubik Ranch. In 1958 they purchased their own farmstead, known as The Hilltop Ranch east of Manning, which was his passion. From working God’s great Earth, tending his herd of cattle, milking cows morning and night, to fixing or repairing almost anything, Herman took great pride in working hard to provide for his family. This instilled in all his children the value of hard work for which they are very grateful. The one thing Herman always made time for was his Catholic Faith. As he continued to grow in his faith he was led to be ordained a Deacon at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit and was assigned to service at St. Joseph’s Parish in Killdeer. He also was active in the Diocesan Cursillo movement for 16 years. Herman was very active in his community. He was a member of the Hereford Association, 4-H leader and was recognized as the “100th yr. 4-H Centennial Family”. He served as a Board member for the Dunn County ASCS, Killdeer Equity Elevator, West Plains Electric, Dunn County Weed, Bailey School District, Killdeer Public School, FFA Advisory, Dunn County Election Board and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Herman loved spending time and attending the activities of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Whether it was through 4-H, sports, church programs or just them coming over to “horse around with grandpa”, he cherished each moment that he had with them. Herman loved to play cards, especially pinochle. He enjoyed being dealt a challenging hand and teaching others the game. One Hand he was dealt that nobody enjoyed was the disease of Alzheimer’s. Although this was a struggle for him and his family, all grew spiritually and personally watching someone so close to them work so hard to maintain the quality and dignity of life he once led and never complaining through the whole process. The Dukart family will be forever grateful to the staff at St. Luke’s for their patience with everything. Dad’s gift of music could be seen by him playing various instruments and in his love to sing. To this day one of our favorite memories is when his great granddaughters Iris and Faith sang Silent Night in German to him and he sang along. He could still let us know he was present by listening to familiar Christmas songs, sing a longs and most importantly his daily prayers. Herman leaves behind the love of his life, his wife of 63 years, Mary (Kovash), his six children: Daryl (Reyne) Dukart of Dunn Center and their children: JohnnieRae (D)(Chris) Geving and daughter Lynn and step daughter Samantha Wiedemann; Cody (Jenn) Dukart and their son Colby; Heidi (Jay) Krank and their children: Colten, Jayne, Mariska, and Kyler; Doug (Sandy) Dukart of Manning and their children: Derrick(Angie) and their children: Iris, Ian and Jude; Amy (Jeremy) Norby and their children: Faith, Tate and Clover; Brian (Rebeca) Dukart, and their daughter Maya; Marcia (Armand) Poirier of Lorette MB. Canada and their children: Andrea (Jason) Adams, Justin Poirier and his son Eithan James, Michelle and Derick Kalma and Carter; Delvin (Kelley) Dukart of Manning and their children: Jessica (Chris) Klym and their children Brayden and Haley; Dustin (Megan) Dukart and their sons Hudson and Hoyt, Becky (Sam) Buchman and their daughter Ellie; Katie Dukart (Finance Justin Eggen); Marietta (Tom) Karey of Manning and their children: Josh, Moriah (Devin) Frank; Melinda (Joe) Fridrich of Dickinson and their sons: Austin, Dylan, Joey and Isaac; his four brothers, Jerome J. (Lorraine), Dukart, Christopher X. (Eileen) Dukart, Norman J. Dukart, and Paul G. (Shirley) Dukart, and brother-in-law Florian P. Schmidt. In lieu of flowers, family suggests memorials be given to Dunn County 4-H, St. Luke’s Nursing Home Alzheimer’s Unit, and the Killdeer Cemetery Association.
