  BIOGRAPHY: Man dies from injuries after van hits him Accident occurred in crossing street BY LISA P. WHITE News-Democrat BELLEVILLE - William T. Dahm died Monday from injuries he sustained when he was struck by a van as he crossed Centreville Avenue. He was 56. Dahm was crossing at State Street when he was hit at 7:05 p.m. Monday. He was pronounced dead from multiple trauma at St. Elizabeth's Hospital at 7:22 p.m., according to the St. Clair County coroner's office. Belleville Police Sgt. Dennis Weisbrodt said Douglas J. Westbrook, 40, of East Alton, was traveling north on Centreville Avenue in a 2000 GMC Safari when he hit Dahm. Weisbrodt was interviewing several witnesses Tuesday. "The crash is still under investigation and pending the investigation, there are no charges," Weisbrodt said. Dahm was a welder at the Peerless-Premier Appliance Co. in Belleville for more than 20 years. He graduated from Althoff Catholic High School and Belleville Area College (now Southwestern Illinois College). He belonged to Boilermakers Union Local No. 363 and the Belleville Jaycees. Dahm is survived by 13 brothers and sisters, including Belleville West High School Principal Bob Dahm and Mary Dahm-Schell, co-owner of The Edge. Dahm was a huge sports fan who enjoyed watching football and baseball and played in fast-pitch softball leagues. He also liked to hunt and fish and play darts. Mary Dahm-Schell said her brother, who was the first son born to the late Norman and Dolores Dahm, was loyal to family and a practical joker. "He always kept abreast of the news and he could talk to anybody and debate anybody about almost any issue. That's something I always enjoyed, arguing politics," she said. Jerry Wojcik said when he married Jeanne Dahm, William Dahm pulled him aside and told him he would need a friend and ally in the family because it was so big. "He was a great guy," Wojcik said. The visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, 120 N. Illinois St. A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Henry's Catholic Church, 5315 W. He was an avid reader with a love for the arts and strong conversation. He loved to hunt and fish and was an exceptional dart player. He was a member of the Boilermakers Union; the Belleville Jaycees; and the Catholic Church. Mr. Dahm was preceded in death by his parents, Norman T. and Dolores E., nee Koch, Dahm, Sr.; his maternal grandparents, Arthur ?Ottie? and Jennie, nee Fries, Koch; his paternal grandparents, Francis and Anna, nee Selementi, Dahm; four uncles, Arthur and Jack Koch, Kenneth Dahm, and Allen Bevirt; an aunt, Mary Koch; and two cousins, Greg and Jeff Bevirt.
