Lakey was born July 13, 1921, in St. Vincent, Morton County to Peter and Josephine (Ferderer) Hoffman. She attended school until she was 16 years old at Center Consolidated School. On Nov. 9, 1943, she married George “Fritz” Weiss in Center. In 1956, they purchased the home farmstead from her parents and made Center their permanent home.
Following the death of her husband, Lakey moved in to Center and remained there until 2010 when she moved to Bismarck.
While on the farm, she was a hard worker and kept quite busy with farm life. Whether it was milking cows, tending the garden, or raising chickens, ducks or geese, she found the time to raise a family and develop lifelong friendships. When not working, she found joy in playing cards, bingo and bunco with family and friends. She was an excellent German cook, canner and baker and taught the girls how to make “good dough.” She was especially known for her “blachinda.” She liked to crochet and made many beautiful afghans and doilies for family and friends. Lakey had a wonderful sense of humor and did not hesitate to let others know she’d won in cards by saying “gotcha.”
She was the hub of the family, loved them dearly, and made everyone feel special.
Lakey is survived by two sons, Kenneth (Carol) Weiss, Lead, S.D., and Thomas (Doris) Weiss, Bismarck; two daughters, Carol Weiss, Mesa, Ariz., and Kathleen “Kathy” (Leland “Marty”) Gullickson, Center; 11 grandchildren, Brian (Theresa) Weiss, Aurora, Colo., Rhonda Weiss, Bismarck, Wayne (Stephanie) Weiss, Center, Kelly Casey, Fargo, Jennifer De Coteau, Bismarck, Tye (Pam) Lantis, Billings, Mont., Chris (Gary) Brewer, Powell, Wyo., Kim (Mike) Lantis de Fonseca, Hermosillo Sonora, Mexico, Nicole Gullickson, Fargo, Amber (Chris) Hilt, Fargo, and Kendra Gullickson, Grand Forks; 18 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Katheryn “Katz” Perschke, Center.
Lakey was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1982; three sisters, Rose Schneider, Magdalen Friedig and Clementine Perschke; two brothers, John and Leo Hoffman; a son, Daniel; and a grandson, Bradley Weiss.
All who knew her were blessed to have shared and a part of her life. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)
