Billy Richard Keenan passed away on Nov. 19, 2014 at NMRMC in Chanute, Kan., due to heart failure. Billy was born on June 18, 1936 to parents Richard and Ellen Keenan of rural Chanute. His rosary and viewing were held on Nov. 23, 2014, followed by a funeral Mass on Nov. 24 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Chanute. Thereafter he was interred in the Osage Pioneer Greenwood Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Color Guard and a graveside blessing by Father Michael Linnebur. A luncheon was provided for family and guests by the Catholic women’s group. Arrangements were handled by relatives who operate Kansas City Funeral Directors.
Billy is survived by his wife Jackie; a son Michael and his spouse, Donna; three stepdaughters, Jeanette, Joan and Jan; and 8 siblings,Thelma, Pat, Donna, Sherry, Denise, Jim, Kevin and their families. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and a vast number of other close relatives. Billy was predeceased by his parents and his sister Judy.
In life Billy was a family man and a nicer or more patient man was never known. He served in the US Army, 102nd ASA, from 1957-59 and was stationed in Germany. He was very proud of his military service and chose to be buried in his uniform. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, having a beautiful yard and family reunions.
He worked for Water District #1 of Johnson County, Kan., for 38 years as a shift supervisor, retiring in 1996 and moving back to Chanute to be nearer his extended family.
