Selma Bender Black, 101, of Fargo, ND formerly of LaMoure, ND passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at One Oak Place Independent Living, Fargo, ND.
Selma Tonette Haugen Wiggins, Bender, Black was born August 5, 1915 to Peter I. and Thea (Bratlien) Haugen on the family farm in Arne Township near Maddock, North Dakota.
She attended Arne Consolidated School through the eighth grade, and graduated from Hesper High School. Selma was then employed with the Ralph Gibson farm at Mapleton and the Fred and Maria Hendrickson Farm at Kindred, and was treated like one of the family. She later moved to Fargo and attended school while working for her room and board at the E.C. Watkins residence. While living in Fargo, Selma did domestic work, waitressing, office work at Moody’s Department Store and S & L Department Store, and also worked at the Fargo Drug Store and Waldorf Lounge and Liquor.
Selma married Arthur Bender on November 19, 1953 at the home of Eddie & Lil Knutson, St. Cloud, Minnesota. They farmed in Dickey County near LaMoure, North Dakota. Art died January 2, 1975. Selma continued to live on the farm, and in 1977 started spending the winter months in Fargo.
On February 23, 1982, she married her former fiance, Donald Black, Sr. at Peace Lutheran Church by Pastor Elmo Anderson. It had been 38 years since their last meeting when he called her in Fargo. They made their home on the farm near LaMoure in the summer and wintered in Fargo. Don died on December 29, 2002.
Selma was a devoted caregiver, helping relatives and friends as a volunteer caregiver. Her kindness and thoughtfulness was truly appreciated as she carried on the care for others all her able life.
She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Fargo, where she taught Sunday school and was active in Altar Guild and attended circle. After her marriage to Arthur Bender, Selma transferred to Trinity Lutheran Church in LaMoure, where she was active in LWML and other church activities. More recently, Selma attended Immanuel Lutheran Church in Fargo, and was active in Bible class and LWML. She was also a member of the Wright Willing Homemakers Club, the Sons of Norway Kringen Klub since 1959, the American Legion Auxiliary since 1946, and Past Presidents Parley, and former member of Degree of Honor Lodge.
She is survived lovingly by her sister, Florence Hoberg Wold; sister-in-law, Bonnie Dyste Haugen Grimes; stepsons, Donald Black and Douglas (Sandy) Black, two step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren. Selma is also survived by nieces and nephews, Pauline Hoffman, Sonja Byrd, Virgina Cahoon, Gene, Keith, Duane, and Tim Haugen, James and Robert Olson, Margaret Ricci, Pat Forsman, Addie Haugen, Barbara Widdecombe, Mary Dunsmore, Sharon Kruegar, Sandra Karlsbraaten, Janice Wagner, David Score, Lorraine Stellner, Charlene Lambert, and Lyle Lambert.
Selma was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Arthur Bender and Donald Black Sr.; siblings, Eunice Olson, Anna, Tilda, and Magnild Haugen, Aril Haugen and Bjarne Haugen, Stella (Art) Martinson, Pearl (Frank) Teclaw, Ingman (Myrtle) Haugen, Palmer (Helen) Haugen, William Hoberg, Claudius Wold, Eva Swartz Haugen Neikerk; stepson, Duane Black, special nephews.
A visitation will be held from 6:00-7:00 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Friday, May 26, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church in LaMoure. Her funeral service will take place at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 27, 2017 also at the church. Burial will be at Rosehill Cemetery near LaMoure.
