Ralph, the son of Stanislaus and Emilia (Leingang) Hopfauf, was born Aug. 2, 1922, in Flasher. He was raised on the family farm north of Flasher, where he also attended school. On June 12, 1945, he married Kathryn Friesz in Fallon. They lived in Mandan, where Ralph worked for Standard Oil until they moved to Seattle in 1959. He worked as a millwright until his retirement. While in Seattle, Ralph and Kathryn opened their home to do foster care for many children. Upon retiring in 1991, he and Kathryn returned to North Dakota to make their home in Mandan.
Ralph and Kathryn spent much of their time traveling with their fifth-wheel trailer home. They often wintered in Arizona, where they enjoyed playing pinochle and visiting many of the casinos. They developed many lasting friendships there which were very important to them.
He will be lovingly remembered for his patience, his quietness and his ability to listen.
Ralph was a member of the Eagles and the Knights of Columbus. His faith was evident by his participation as a eucharistic minister at St. Joseph's Church.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Kathryn, Mandan; one son and daughter-in-law, Gerald (Phyllis), Butte, Mont.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Paulette (Landy) Manuel, Seattle, and Candy (Jerry) Casey Carter, Everett, Wash.; nine grandchildren, Jason, Jared and Jacob Hopfauf, Larisa and Seve Manuel, and Jessilyn, James, Jordyn and Jackson Carter; one great-granddaughter, Riley Hopfauf; two great-grandsons, William and Christopher Hopfauf; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Anton (Frances), Mandan, Florian (Georgia), Baker, Mont., and Leo, Bismarck; and five sisters and one brother-in-law, Rose Bohl, Frances Bohl and Genivieve Eckroth, all of Mandan, and Agnes Eckroth and Clementine (Gene) Volk, all of Bismarck.
