John Howard Landvater, 87, passed away peacefully on Dec. 29, 2012, after declining health, at The Oaks Health Center, Crane's Mill, W. Caldwell, NJ. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, in Herbert Hinman Hall, Crane's Mill.
John was born on October 9, 1925, to the late Mary Jane Greenawalt and Howard R. Landvater, of Mt. Joy, PA. He served in the US Army under Gen. George Patton, fought in the Battle of the Bulge as a staff sergeant and was discharged with meritorious awards. He graduated from Lehigh University with a degree in mechanical engineering and on June 13, 1948, married Dorothy Kahler, of Landisville, PA. After graduation, John worked for several years at Hamilton Watch in Lancaster, PA. In his early career, he was president of Pennsylvania Scale Corporation, in Leola, PA. John began a scale start-up corporation in Greensboro, NC, in 1961, and moved in 1963, to O'Haus Scale Corp., Parsippany, NJ, as vice president of engineering, where he pioneered the development of several innovative scale designs, including the triple beam balance. In 1975, John started Landvater and Associates, a new product development consulting company, retiring in 1997.
Many happy hours were spent sailing with his family and friends in the Chesapeake Bay, the Caribbean and the San Juan Islands. His artistic abilities are remembered in the pieces he masterfully created and the talents he passed to his family. John and Dorothy devoted much of their lives to the loving care of two sons with health care issues. In retirement, John was actively involved in many volunteer organizations, including Renew and Crane's Mill Retirement Community.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy Kahler Landvater; sons, Darryl Landvater (Dr. Stephanie) of Williston, VT; Gregory Landvater, of Plainfield, NJ; Lance Landvater, MD (Cynthia), of Raleigh, NC; David Landvater, of W. Caldwell, NJ; grandchildren, Miranda Landvater Hvide (Anders), of Boynton Beach, FL; Elizabeth Landvater, of Raleigh, NC; Alexander Landvater, of San Francisco, CA; Spencer Landvater, of Charleston, SC; Lance Landvater, II, of Jackson Hole, WY; Ryan and Brayden Landvater, of Williston, VT; great-grandson Kristoffer Hvide, of Boynton Beach, FL; brother, Robert Landvater (Kathleen) of New Hanover, PA; sisters, Mary Kathryn Eberly (Jay) of Mt. Joy, PA, and Joan Goldstein (Barry), of Walnut Creek, CA; and many nieces and nephews. He is lovingly remembered by his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Summit United Methodist Church, 17 Kent Place Blvd., Summit, NJ 07901.
