She helped her parents on the family farm and attended school periodically when there was no work to do. They later moved to Bison, SD area where they farmed and ranched. Julia was united in marriage to Phillip Ketterling on October 21, 1921 at Hosmer, SD. Following their marriage they lived in the Bison area, later moving to a farm south of Reeder and then to a farm east of Hettinger. In 1944 they purchased a farm 3 miles south of Hettinger which they operated until retiring in 1954. In 1965 they purchased the former Main Cafe which they operated until Phillip's health began to fail. Phillip passed away on July 27, 1970 at which time Julia moved to an apartment in Hettinger. She often helped women much younger than her by giving them rides and helping them with other errands. She maintained her driver's license and the keys to her car until she reached the age of 95. In November 2000, Julia moved into the Western Horizons Assisted Living Complex where she remained until September 6, 2005, when, due to failing health, she entered the Hillcrest Care Center.
