Alvin Victor Aisenbrey, age 93, of Rapid City, SD, passed away February 27, 2015 at the Sturgis Regional Senior Care Center.
Family and friends mourn his departure from their lives. His love, guidance, no-nonsense manner, sense of humor and sly/flirty/mischievous smile will be sorely missed.
Alvin, the middle of five children, was born in a small two bedroom house in Alpena, SD on October 30, 1921 during the Depression Era to Andrew and Lydia (Feiok) Aisenbrey.
Alvin grew up in Alpena, and attended Alpena High School along with his brothers Amandus “Percy” Aisenbrey and Andrew Aisenbrey and sisters Verlinda Bentson and Loretta Jones (all deceased).
He wasb a 1939 graduate of Alpena High School. During those high school years Alvin played baseball, basketball, hunted pheasants/rabbits and found his great love of horses and farming.
Alvin was married to Irene Ruth Meyer on August 3, 1941 and their honeymoon consisted of exploring the Black Hills and climbing the steps up to the faces of Mt. Rushmore.
For the first four years of their married life they lived on a farm near Alpena. In 1944 a daughter Sandra Lee arrived and the following year, 1945, Alvin and Irene moved to Rapid City, South Dakota.
Alvin and Irene chose a home on the edge of the Black Hills near Cleghorn Springs, where they lived for 58 years until Irene’s death in September 2003.
In 1952 son Lawrence Ramon (deceased) was born and in 1954 son Terrence Jay. Following Irene’s death, Alvin lived at the Cleghorn home he and family members designed and constructed until 2012 when he became a resident of Sturgis Regional Senior Care Center.
During the early years in Rapid City, Alvin worked for Fairmont Creamery, harvested lumber and worked side by side with Irene managing the Canyon Lake Boathouse.
In 1947 Alvin began his career with JC Penney managing the shoe department. In 1972 Alvin and Irene purchased Canyon Lake Liquors in Rapid City and managed the store together for 21 years.
When he retired in 1993, Alvin loved to work outdoors caring for the grounds of the Cleghorn home and continued to enhance the trail up the mountain to Flower Pot Rock.
Alvin never lost his love for baseball, basketball and football at all levels.
He loved watching the birds, turkeys, bighorns, deer and any other animal that would come to visit the Cleghorn home.
Alvin’s last big pheasant hunt was for his 90th birthday at Dakota 380. Alvin loved to interact with his son’s horses, especially the new little ones that arrived in 2012.
