ELDORADO —
Tyrus "Ty" Raymond Cobb, 85, loving father of four daughters, went to be with the Lord at 5:20 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind.
"Ty" was the only child of McCoy and Lorene (Slow) Cobb born on a Saturday, Aug. 18, 1928. Ty grew up in Eldorado but moved to Detroit, Mich., a few years after his father was killed in a Harco coal mining accident, and in 1946 graduated high school in Michigan. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Puerto Rico from 1946-1950. When he returned from the service he attended Southern Illinois University and graduated with a degree in government and a minor in history. After graduation he married the love of his life, Marsha Don Hodges on Jan. 2, 1953, whom he was married for 26 years, and preceded him in death April 21, 1979.
On March 15, 1985, Ty married the second love of his life for 22 years, Winnie Ellen Butler who preceded him in death Oct. 19, 2007.
OUR DAD loved Eldorado and proudly served for years on the Unit 4 School Board, several local clubs, and worked alongside other devoted locals in building the stage downtown Eldorado.
OUR DAD was an active member of First Christian Church of Eldorado; and was thrilled with his participation in their recent building expansion. We were so proud to see his name No. 1 on the speed dial at the church.
OUR DAD was an avid golfer at Eldorado and Harrisburg. He became a legend in Eldorado after making a hole in one and the Eldorado Daily Journal memorialized the event by putting a "Ty Cobb" picture swinging a baseball bat at a golf ball!
OUR DAD retired from the Illinois Power Company in April 1990 after 33 years of devoted service. He had many friends at the office that he referred to fondly.
OUR DAD enjoyed the love and companionship of his most recent love Sue "Susie" (Kingston/Davenport) his loving wife, who survives him.
In addition, OUR DAD is survived by his four daughters and family that he was so proud of: Donna Beth Barnett, Marion; Cheryl Kay (Steve) Griffith Haubstadt, Ind.; Caryl Ray Kelley, Evansville, Ind.; Debra Lorraine (Dan) Stocks Ft. Myers, Fla.; stepchildren: Jim (Stacy) Butler Harrisburg and Nancy Butler (Shannon) Cooley of San Francisco, Calif. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
OUR DAD had such good friends in Eldorado and Harrisburg, many of whom preceded him in death. And others with whom he still enjoyed weekly gatherings of "The Friday Night Group."
All of his children will dearly miss him but are consoled, knowing he's in Heaven with the people he loved and he will be watching over us ALL.
Please come visit with the family as we celebrate his full amazing life, 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at Watson's Funeral Home in Eldorado. Visitation will also be 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 30, at the First Christian Church followed by the funeral services at 11 a.m. Dennis Robison will officiate and burial will follow at Wolf Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please make contribution to the First Christian Church Building Fund.
Online condolences may be sent to the family at watsonfuneralhome.net
