Dale Delmer Kleingartner was born on April 28, 1933 at McClusky, North Dakota to Edward and Bertha (Bender) Kleingartner. Dale attended school in McClusky and graduated in 1950. He served in the United States Navy from 1950 to 1954. Following his discharge, he attended two years of Business College. On April 24, 1954, he married Shirley Bakken in Moorhead, Minnesota. The couple lived in Carrington, North Dakota for six years, Worthington, Minnesota for two years, and then moved to Algona in 1963, all while working for Cargill. He later worked for Dickins Coop and Whittemore Coop before retiring in 1991 and farming until 2003.
Dale was a longtime member of the First Lutheran Church in Algona where he previously served on the church council. Dale enjoyed all sports but especially golf. For several years, Dale and Shirley wintered in Florida. Dale also enjoyed fishing, hunting and farming as hobbies but his real love was spending time with his grandchildren.
Dale died on Tuesday morning, December 28, 2004 at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona at the age of 71.
Survivors include his wife Shirley, daughter Vickie Welch of Truckee, California, son Mitch and wife Marla of Iowa City, Iowa and daughter Kim and husband Steve Thomas of Makena, Illinois. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Justin, Jenna, Zachary and Taylor, brothers, Herb and wife Marie of Minot, North Dakota, Art and wife Doji of West Fargo, North Dakota, Frank and wife Diane of Issaquah, Washington, Ed of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Alan and wife Norma of West Fargo, North Dakota, sisters, Olinda McCabe of Moorhead, Minnesota and Bella and husband Jack McKenzie of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Mary and husband Dennis Levin of West Fargo, North Dakota. Dale was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Gertrude, Alice and one sister in infancy.
