Estella Helen Gauch, nee Bergquist, 86, of Freeburg, Ill., born Feb. 23, 1923, in Belleville, Ill., died Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at Freeburg Care Center, Freeburg, Ill.
Estella worked as a telephone operator in Freeburg and as a cook at Freeburg Grade School. She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Freeburg, Ill., where she served as a Sunday School teacher for 25 years, was a member of the choir for 27 years, and was a member of the Women's Guild. Mrs. Gauch was a Girl Scout leader, a Brownie leader, and a Cub Scout den mother. She also volunteered as a teacher's aide at Freeburg Grade School. She was a member of the Homemakers Extension and, in later years, the Freeburg Senior Citizens.
Estella was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Rosa, nee Bachman, Bergquist; a brother, Carl Bergquist Jr.; and a sister, Lillian Dambacher.
Surviving are her husband of 69 years, Harry E. Gauch, whom she married July 23, 1939; five children, Carol Jean (Donald) Stookey of Chesterfield, Mo., Pat (Peter) Vogel and Dean (Denise) Gauch, both of Freeburg, Ill., Dale (Angie) Gauch of Belleville, Ill., and Peggy (Robert) Klotz of Freeburg, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Freeburg, Ill., or to the American Cancer Society.
Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 3, 2009, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Freeburg, Ill., and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 4, 2009, at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Freeburg, Ill.
Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 4, 2009, at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Freeburg, Ill., with the Rev. Earl Crecelius officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery, Freeburg, Ill.
