Bio: Oct. 28, 2007, marks the passing of a good man. Oscar J. Boeshans was born May 21, 1923, in Beulah, N.D., to parents Joseph and Marie Boeshans.Oscar was a person who loved all kinds of sports and was a tremendous, gutsy athlete himself who set the record for the half-mile and mile race the same day in the state of North Dakota. That record, which was unbroken for 40-plus years, earned him the honor of carrying the Olympic torch in Hawaii in the early 1940s. His most beloved sports however were those in which he watched his own children and grandchildren compete. It was at these events we all remember seeing that special twinkle in his eyes and the familiar somewhat mischievous little smirk that was only Oscar (Grandpa).Oscar is survived by his wife Helen, who was his life's treasure; two sons; and four daughters.Oscar is also survived by three brothers and three sisters, all six of whom reside in North Dakota; 17 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren, soon to be nine.Although, Oscar believed all children needed to be raised tough, responsible and independent; if he failed at times to instill these characteristics it was because under what at times appeared to be a very thick skin was a heart too soft to make it happen.
