Frieda (Blumhardt) Hummel daughter of Jacob and Christine (Hoff) was born February 22,1923 in McIntosh County on the homestead four miles west of Venturia, ND. Sharing her life were two brothers and seven sisters. She attended county and town school up to the eighth grade. In 1939 thru depression years with lack of money she had to stay home to help with one of her brothers and parents with the farming plus she did some babysitting for the family and neighbors. In 1943, her parents gave up farming and moved to the town of Venturia. On February 20, 1947 she married Clifford Hummel, they were blessed with two daughters. In the meantime her parents needed her to take care of her mother; which she did until she passed away. Frieda also took care of her father until he moved into a nursing home. He passed away at the age of 98.
She raised a huge garden and chickens and always told us she did all this withou trunning water. She also helped her husband with farming and running the loca lcream station and later on with his well drilling business. The family moved to Ashley, August 25, 1969 which made life a lot easier for she finally had running water. She kept busy doing different jobs like babysitting and helping friends and family whenever they needed her. In 1977 she started to work forMcIntosh County Hospital doing housekeeping and laundry for 11 years. She retired in 1988 after suffering a heart attack. In 1990 she stayed with her daughter and son-in-law to help with their daughter, Amanda Rose, for eight months until her death. On June 11, 1994 Frieda moved to Bismarck. While in Bismarck, she kept very busy volunteering at numerous places. She was a member of the RSVP for many years; her favorite place to volunteer was the Bismarck Tribune; which she did to her last days. She loved playing pool. Her passion was crocheting for friends and family and strangers and making many crafts and putting puzzles together with her daughter and son-in-law. She shared the love of soap operas with her granddaughter, Colleen; it was something she watched every day. Her hospitality was known by all for feeding visitors; there was always food on her stove. Her favorite music was old time waltzes and polkas; her radio was always on KBMR. She loved going out to coffee with her Delzer sisters and taking us to the Little Cottage Cafe. She enjoyed her Sunday meals with her loving family. Her favorite thing to do was dye Easter eggs sometimes boiled and sometimes raw.
Her pride and joy was her cat, Fluffy Marie, who she had for 25 years. Cats held a special place in her heart.
Frieda is survived by her daughter, Shirley (Jon) Snider; granddaughter, Colleen (Dwight) Pfliger; many nieces, nephews, cousins and brother-in-law, Fred Strobel.
