Charles William Hohman age 91, a Canton resident for the past 65 years, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012 at The Sterling House where he had resided since January, 2011. He was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Canton, Ohio for 65 years. Born Feb. 24, 1921 in Caldwell, Ohio and raised on his family farm, he fondly recalled as a child, attending a one room school house for his first eight years of schooling. He graduated from Caldwell High School in 1939. At the onset of World War II , he was drafted into the Army and served with the 95th Infantry Division for 3.5 years. As a Staff Sergeant, he fought for two years on the European Front, including the Battle of the Bulge. Upon the surrender of Germany, he returned home to marry his high school sweetheart, Thelma, July 14, 1945. At the time of their marriage, he was on furlough and had orders to ship out in August, 1945 to Japan. Fortunately, Japan surrendered, World War II ended and our parents then happily settled in Canton, Ohio where they resided all of their adult life. He worked for the Ford Motor Company in Canton for 38 years and was forever loyal to the Ford brand name. Having grown up on a farm, he had a love of nature and gardening. He said that he loved to watch things grow, which included his four children, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He encouraged his children to work hard and pursue higher education. He was so proud of their accomplishments and among his children and grandchildren are three Registered Nurses; a Medical Doctor; a Healthcare Administrator; a Dental Hygienist; a Teacher; a CPA; a Hotel Sales Representative, a Retail Market Clerk and a Carpenter. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Thelma Clara Yontz; mother and father, Cora and Emil Hohman; sisters, Lucy Hildebrand and Edna Archer; brothers, James, Morris and Herman Hohman; and son-in-law, Michael Joseph Watters.
He is survived by three daughters, Carol Phillips (Dave) of Canton, Ohio, Arlene Watters of Coraopolis, Pa. and Joyce Isler (Gary) of North Canton, Ohio; son, Kenneth Hohman (Polly) of Akron, Ohio; grandchildren, Mark Wootton, Lori Laghaeian (Sean), Jennifer Shaver (Jeff), Jason Watters (Aimee), Jessica Hohman, Chad Isler and Karl Isler; great-grandchildren, Aidan and Ethan Laghaeian, Ashley and Nicole Wootton, Mia, Olivia and Julia Shaver; sister, Edith Schramm of Zanesville, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews. He loved all of them more than they will ever know. The family would like to give special thanks to Crossroads Hospice and the Sterling House Staff for their loving support and care of our father.
