Herbert Lachenmeier, 75, Velva, ND, formerly of Napoleon, ND, passed away Friday, August 26, 2016, in Velva, ND.
Herbert Howard Lachenmeier was born September 9, 1940, the son of August and Alma (Kaul) Lachenmeier, on a farm 11 miles NE of Napoleon, ND.
Herbie married Margaret Kaeding on January 7, 1961, in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Minot, ND. They made their home in Minot, then moved to Velva in 1966, where they raised their family. They were blessed with one daughter, Lori Lynn, in 1968. Herbie’s three grandchildren, Nick, Caitlan and McKenna were the joys of his life.
When Herbie was 17, he lied about his age and began working for the North Dakota State Highway Department to help support his family. In 1976 he started his business, 3L Landscaping & Concrete, on a part-time basis until 1978 when he temporarily left the highway department to operate his business full time. He operated 3L Landscaping and Concrete for 14 years. He then went back to the highway department, retiring in 1999 after a total of 27 years of working for the state. In his retirement, he continued to operate his landscaping and concrete business and worked for FEMA for 2 flood seasons.
Herbie enjoyed everything outside, from hunting and fishing, to gardening and feeding the nation’s bird population everywhere from Canada to Mexico. Throughout the years he had many beloved pet cats. Not only did he take care of his own cats, he fed all of the neighborhood strays too.
Herbie is survived by his wife of 55 years, Margaret; daughter, Lori (Eric) Grushkin; grandchildren, Caitlan Foley and McKenna Foley; brothers, Gerald (Peggy) Lachenmeier and Charles (Deb) Lachenmeier; sisters, Kathy Lachenmeier, Ruby Gienger and Marjie Braun; and his stepsister, Ella Guthmiller.
Herbie was preceded in death by his parents; cherished grandson, Nick Foley; brothers, Jim, Gary and Walter Lachenmeier; sisters, Lucille Downing, Leona Reasor and Caroline Marchus; and 7 stepbrothers & sisters.
