Robert Lyle Hanes, 92, of Lowell, died Monday, February 20, 2012, at Marietta Center.
He was born July 8, 1919 in Newport to Wilbur Clarence and Lydia Margaret Hendricks Hanes. He was a graduate of Newport High School. Lyle was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving from March 14, 1941 through October 24, 1945. While in the military, he married Evelyn Schwartz on March 24, 1942, in Monterey, CA.
He had worked at the A&P Store as produce manager for 32 years and while there became president of Food Store Employee Union Local #347 out of Charleston, WV that served union workers in Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky. He then worked in the engineer's office at Ohio Department of Transportation, District 10, retiring after 12 years of service.
He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Church, the Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons of Ohio, Lodge #436, 63 year member of the Grand Council Royal &Select Masons of Ohio, Council #78, 63 year member of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Ohio, Rufus Putnam Chapter #108, 64 year member of the American Legion, Post #750 in Lowell, having served as commander twice and was also a past district commander, life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #5108 in Marietta, life member of 40/8 Club, Local #1523, 64 year member Marietta Commandery #50, Knights Templar in Marietta, 64 year member of the Aladdin Shriners, Columbus, 64 year member Clan #8 Buckeye State Grand & Glorious Order of Hillbilly Degree, and member of the State Highway Patrol Auxiliary. He had served on various committees and boards of trustees, most notable being the Washington County Veterans Administration, Washington County Heart Association and the Lowell Octoberfest.
Lyle is survived by his daughter, Ellen S. Biehl and husband, Ernest, of Lowell, son, David A. Hanes and wife, Brenda of Parkersburg, WV, grandchildren, Carrie M. Hickman and husband, James, of Belpre, Eric R. Biehl of Columbus, Elizabeth A. Hanes of Belpre, Rachael L. Grogg of Parkersburg, great grandsons, Logan M. Hanes of Belpre and Jaden M. Grogg of Parkersburg.
He was preceded in death by his wife on August 25, 2006, grandsons, Todd Christopher Biehl and Matthew David Hanes, his parents and sisters, Lucille Marquis and Thelma Karcher.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 23, 2012, at the Lowell Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home, with Jim Fernihough officiating. Friends may call on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. There will be Masonic services at the funeral home at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Burial, with full military honors, will be at Greenlawn Cemetery.
