Schmalz Irene
Irene passed away August 5, 2014 at the Benedictine Living Center of Garrison after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.
Irene was born on February 4th, 1929 to John and Caroline (Wock) Hartman. She grew up and attended country school in Dunn County. As a young girl, she worked with her parents on the farm. On October 14, 1947, Irene and Christ Schmalz were united in marriage at St. Edwards Church of Fayette. To this union nine children were born: Don, Carol, David, Joe, Annette, Jim, Chris, Ali and Doug. Together, the family made their home on Christ’s parents homestead. Christ passed away October 6th, 1978.
Irene loved music and played the accordion and piano by ear, and to everyone’s enjoyment. She always played a song if someone would request her talent at events such as picnics, and for the enjoyment of nursing home residents. With her music came dancing and she fully enjoyed a Saturday night out dancing to the polka and waltz’s played by a home town band. She was a member of St. Edward’s and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, sang in the church choir and helped at church functions. She especially loved and enjoyed her children and grandchildren. She cherished her time in the Tolley, ND area and became close friends with many people, especially a dear friend Richard Johnson. After a long battle with Alzheimer’s, she passed away on August 5, 2014.
Irene is survived by her 9 children, Don (Patty) of Cody, WY, Carol (Alvin) Rebsom of Shepherd, MT, David (Barbara) of Ballantine, MT, Joe (Kate) of Shepherd, MT, Annette Grohs of Lino Lakes, MN, Jim (Angie) of Shelley, ID, Chris (Linda) of Ft. Worth, TX, Ali (Kent) Bahl of Sherwood, ND, and Doug (Brenda) of Minnetrista, MN; 25 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; brothers, Paul (Wanda) Hartman of Billings, MT, and Roy Hartman of Richardton; sisters, Frances Keelan of Denver, CO, and Florence Schmidt of Dickinson; and brother-in-law, Mel Kowis of Denver, CO. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, brothers, Leo and Jerry Hartman; and sister, Caroline Kowis.
